Is coconut a problem for a cashew allergy? Usually not. Coconut is botanically a fruit, not a tree nut, and most tree-nut-allergic people tolerate it, though confirm with your allergist.

Sunflower seed butter, the nut-free substitute that is the allergen. SunButter and similar sunflower seed butters are the peanut-free and tree-nut-free spreads used widely in nut-free schools and lunchboxes. For a sunflower-allergic child this is the load-bearing hiding place, because nut-free does not mean seed-free: the product is chosen precisely because it has no nuts, and the seed allergen rides in unnoticed. A child who is avoiding peanut may meet sunflower exactly where everyone has assumed safety.

Anisakis is a fish parasite, and it is a separate allergy from a fish allergy. Some people react not to the fish itself but to Anisakis, a small parasite that can be present in fish, especially fish eaten raw or lightly cured. Anisakis allergy is its own entity and is sometimes mistaken for a salmon or fish allergy. Because reacting to the parasite is not the same question as reacting to the fish's own protein, and because the two are managed differently, this is one to sort out with your allergist rather than assume, particularly if reactions have come from raw, sushi-grade, or cured fish.

Will my child outgrow macadamia allergy?. Macadamia-specific outgrowing data is genuinely scarce. The honest, class-level picture is that tree-nut allergy, once established, is more often persistent than outgrown, with only a minority of children outgrowing a given tree-nut allergy; a macadamia-specific outgrowing rate is not established at the quality floor, so this page does not publish one.

The other molluscs travel with scallop. Clams, oysters, mussels, and cockles are molluscs, the same shellfish group as scallop, and they share tropomyosin, so a child allergic to one mollusc is often allergic to others. The reported clinical reactivity between mollusc members is high, on the order of one in two, higher than the rate between molluscs and crustaceans. The practical rule most allergists use is to treat the whole mollusc group, the bivalves (clam, oyster, mussel, cockle) and usually the cephalopods (squid, octopus) too, as off the list unless a supervised challenge with your allergist says otherwise. Mollusc cross-reactivity is less uniform than the high crustacean-to-crustacean kind, so this is "test rather than assume" in both directions, but the conservative default within the mollusc group is to treat them together. The depth of how the mollusc group cross-reacts lives on the mollusc cross-reactivity page; this is the short version.

Cod: which protein your child reacts to changes everything. Cod is not one thing to the immune system. It is a handful of proteins, and which one your child reacts to shapes how serious the allergy tends to be. For cod there is one protein that carries most of the weight, and there is also an honest limit to what the blood number can tell you.

Sesame is the common question, and the answer is "test it, do not assume it.". Sesame and sunflower come up together because they are both seeds and they share that 2S-albumin surface, and a sesame-allergic family often asks whether sunflower (or SunButter) is safe, or the reverse. The overlap on testing is real and can be high, but a confidently-established clinical cross-reactivity between sesame and sunflower is not settled, and the popular reassurance that a sesame-allergic child can simply eat sunflower is not something this page will assert. Each seed is its own allergist question, assessed clinically, not cleared on the strength of the other.

Dust mites and cockroaches share the same protein, which matters for the nose, not the plate. Tropomyosin is not only in shellfish. House dust mite and cockroach carry a homologous tropomyosin, so a crab test can cross-react with them. For most families this is why a dust-mite-allergic child can test positive to crab without ever having reacted to it, and it is the reason whole-crab tests carry false positives. It also carries one specific, important caution that lives in the exposure section: a shellfish-allergic child who is a candidate for dust-mite allergy shots for asthma or hay fever should have that overlap discussed first, because the shot extract contains the same protein.

Avocado oil, in food and in skincare Avocado oil shows up as a "healthy" oil in dressings, mayonnaise, and snacks, and in soaps, lip balms, hair products, and facial oils.

Avocado oil, in food and in skincare. Avocado oil shows up as a "healthy" oil in dressings, mayonnaise, and snacks, and in soaps, lip balms, hair products, and facial oils. There is a nuance: refined avocado oil is typically low in residual protein and a lower-risk contact surface, while unrefined or cold-pressed oil retains more protein and is a more plausible contact surface. This page does not tell you that refined oil is safe for you; that is the allergist's call. Treat unrefined or cold-pressed avocado oil, in food or on skin, as a real surface.

What actually predicts a bad wheat reaction. For the immediate, antibody-driven allergy, the strongest inputs are the pattern of which wheat proteins your child reacts to and, above all, the history of how your child has reacted before. Wheat has no single decision number, so the picture is the protein pattern plus the history, read by your allergist (StatPearls 2024). A positive Tri a 14 (the lipid transfer protein) is a marker that systemic reactions are possible rather than a reassuring finding.

Just diagnosed with Clam allergy? Start here.Carry two epinephrine auto-injectors everywhere your child goes, and learn the few signs that mean use one now. That is the section to read tonight. If you do not have the prescription yet, that is the first call to your allergist or pediatrician.Read every label, every time, and read the whole ingredient list, not just the "contains" line. The word to catch is clam, and the surprise is that a US label is not required to name it at all.The other molluscs travel with clam. Oysters, mussels, scallops, and cockles share the same main protein, and mollusc allergies tend to come as a group, so treat the whole mollusc group as off the list until an allergist says otherwise.

Celery: which protein your child reacts to changes everything. Celery is not one thing to the immune system. It is a handful of proteins, and which one a person reacts to changes how serious the allergy tends to be, and whether cooking changes anything at all. The good news is that one blood test sorts it, and asking for it by name is the highest-value thing you can do.
