How to do with books, especially bibles, when you live in a material world? Well, William Hogarth of 18th century fame reminds us of the typical re-using (of bindings). In this case, the leather binding is re-used for a shoe sole. #bookhistory #booksky
A HathiTrust collection where I've stashed some of my favorite memoirs, etc., re: 19th-c. British authorship and publishing. Recently expanded, but suggested additions are always welcome. babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/mb?a=lis... #victorian #19th-c. #bookhistory

The hardcover is still about 150 Euro/USD, and I am deeply sorry for this. If you wanna read the pdf, drop me an email. #bookhistory

It was very nice to come face-to-face with little Hugo Pictor today (MS Bodl. 717, fol. 287v). Unusually for a medieval scribe, Hugo is depicted as left-handed. He was also on the front cover of my book! #bookhistory #medievalsky
Reminder: TOMORROW 2 researchers will give an online Nottebohm Talk about their #BookHistory research in Antwerp. 📚💙 📜

Paper used to be for elites — papyrus, bamboo, silk. Then rag pulp, watermarks, and the 1799 continuous machine. By 1844 wood pulp put writing in everyone's hands. Same fight indie authors still win: get the story to the many, not the gatekeepers. #IndieAuthor #SelfPublishing #BookHistory
Illustration from "The Smiling Book" by Lu Wheat with illustrations by Sotarō Suzuki and published by T. Hasegawa in 1897. Color woodblock illustrations on double leaves of crepe paper in Japanese style binding (fukuro toji).

Another nice second-hand bookshop find today. This time a 1939 first edition of Isaiah Berlin’s Karl Marx: His Life and Environment, published by Thornton Butterworth. It was Berlin’s first book.
