Just boarded the all-day, all-night train from Bucharest to Istanbul. It seems to be only one carriage at the moment, which i assume will be connected to a bigger train at some point.

🧪 probably a long shot, but: has anyone heard of a two-headed trout specimen named Cuthbert the Great?
the specimen allegedly went to the AMNH in 1940 but the museum has no record of it. trying to track down Cuthbert.

Thought the sewage scandal was bad? Think again.
Sewage works are also a major industrial waste disposal route. Power stations, airports, hospitals, landfills: ~608bn litres last year. No independent regulator.

Arriving into a very sunny Bucharest. Slightly behind schedule, but a great overnight trip. I've now got two nights in Romania before heading to Istanbul 🇹🇷

And I'm on my first sleeper train of the trip! Going from Vienna to Bucharest. I'm in a four-bed couchette, but am currently the only person in here. Im sure that won't be the case for long.

Spending the day in Vienna as I "wait" for my sleeper train from Austria to Romania.
Three trains later and I have arrived in Vienna 🇦🇹 Great to be going by rail from today. It makes everything much easier — and I even managed to briefly dip into the restaurant car.
The predictions about this year's #elnino keep getting worse. But the on-the-ground reality is already pretty bad: https://therevelator.org/super-el-nino-indonesia-drought/
Geneva to Vienna by train today, via a rather convoluted route through Zurich, Bregenz and Feldkirch. The cost of a cheaper ticket, I guess...
I have arrived in Switzerland! 🇨🇭 1.5 hours late into Geneva, but not too bad considering we had a pitstop at a tyre garage.
Before leaving on my own flight-free trip to this year's UN biodiversity and climate conferences, I spoke with @flightfreeuk.bsky.social about the challenges and benefits of travelling by land:
The impacts of current storms in Spain are very visible between Barcelona and Girona. Let's hope they aren't supercharged by climate change like in previous years.
Last night was also my first train of the journey. High-speed from Madrid to Barcelona. Almost on time.
