My former @upenn.edu PhD student who defended her thesis a couple of years ago, Eileen Goodwin, was on @jeopardyofficial.bsky.social last night and won! She ironically missed a question about antigens, but we will cut her some slack because she was amazing! Congrats Eileen!

It was always a joy talking with Helen, because she understood so much about flu and was a master communicator. This is such a loss for our community.

It is too early to know how this season will shake out. It is possible that we are heading towards a super early flu season and that this H1N1 variant (if it continues to circulate) might cause disproportionate amount of disease in young people. Now is the time to get vaccinated. 4/4

And here is a link to Alex Greninger's post documenting that 13 of the 17 H1s sequenced from a recent Seattle outbreak have G155E HA substitution. 3/4

Here is our Penn-CEIRR study that Jesse posted 2 weeks ago showing that many young people have antibodies that don't react to this new H1N1 variant. We think that people born after 2009 are more likely to have this antibody type (2009 is a key year in H1 history).2/4

This is a really important development. It appears H1N1 cases are rising in the western part of the United States, and these viruses have a key HA substitution that @jbloomlab.bsky.social recently demonstrated is targeted by antibodies in young people. 1/4
