"If we once again adjust Actual Individual Consumption (AIC) for differences in working hours, we find that the US ranks higher than any country other than Norway.... When excluding health from AIC, then, we find the US to be relatively unremarkable..."

''This doesn’t compute. It reflects the neo-mercantilist logic in which the welfare of countries depends largely on what they produce and sell rather than on what they consume. Adam Smith first criticized this model in book four of The Wealth of Nations: “Consumption is the sole end and [...]''

A new essay in Phenomenal World on the US-Europe competitiveness debate, in which I try to locate the obsession with relative economic performance in a broader discourse of American triumphalism and declinism, "the unwitting last refuge of great power delusions."

Just a reminder that I have a feature essay in the latest Jacobin issue (except below). It's a very good issue and worth subscribing for: jacobin.com/subscribe

The definitive piece on this “debate”. Major public service contribution to global GDP by @newlefteviews.bsky.social.

tl;dr: As anyone who’s spent time in both places knows, Europe has not fallen behind in any way that matters for actual welfare.

phenomenalworld.org/analysis/eur... Wonderful article by @newlefteviews.bsky.social on the hairy choices needed to make cross country comparisons. @jwmason.bsky.social and I had to cut about 20 pages in Against Money on PPP from the draft, and this piece is really thorough on that and other issues.

I had the pleasure of joining Joe and Tracy on the great Odd Lots podcast to talk about Europe. The short version: I’m bullish on Europe’s position relative to the US but bearish on trade with China.
