Alberta's Energy Regulator only took 14 days to decide that it won't require an impact assessment for Suncor's plan to dump oilsands tailings into the Athabasca River endangering nearby/downstream communities & ecosytems. indigenousinsider.substack.com/p/sacrifice-... @brandimorin.bsky.social #ABLeg

Please don’t assume anything, Alberta. Vote against the Russian and American-fuelled separation self-sabotage. Send a strong message to the rest of Canada that we’re in this together. Foreign actors want you to vote for your own Brexit or Trump… or to help them win by just staying home.
The UCP wants you to get bogged down on the policy debates around infill. Don't be fooled. Their intrusion into local democracy reveals something far more troubling to folks across the political spectrum.
Will be on CJSW 90.9 FM tomorrow morning chatting with @peterloliver.bsky.social about this story. At 9:15ish. Tune in! 📻
"Oil companies are getting a sweet deal" on #TransMountain shipping tolls, approved last week by Canada's Energy Regulator. The decision means Canadians won't recoup the $40B in public funds spent on the project. Staff Lawyer Eugene Kung weighs in: www.nationalobserver.com/2026/10/05/n... #cdnpoli
I didn't mince my words. Alberta's anti-immigration referendum questions are racist. They are also a potential disaster for Alberta's economy. Last night, I rose in the Senate to denounce them - and to thank all the thousands of Albertans fighting against them. Please share. #notothenine #cdnpoli
For months, Alberta’s business leaders largely stayed away from the debate on separation. Now, with a referendum just weeks away, a flurry of businesses are taking Canada’s side. But oil producers and pipeline companies remain notably absent from the debate.
A decade ago, Calgary city council approved a new pedestrian strategy that aimed to dramatically reduce carnage on city streets by 2025. Instead the opposite happened. We dig into why—and what comes next. #yyccc
Yet another dead killer whale — J31’s baby.
J pod is part of the endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales that live in on the west coast. Increasingly busy, noisy, hot waters where it’s hard to hunt dwindling salmon.
Choose orcas, not oil.
I wrote this two years ago, when the Roberts Bank terminal expansion was clearly heading toward some kind of approval — but well before another new oil pipeline was going to feed into it. This Pacific Link pipeline will add even more noise stress to the underwater recordings included in this piece:
Carney begins his announcement of a new oil pipeline by acknowledging the climate-linked wildfire that came close to levelling the town where he's announcing the new oil pipeline. A flat circle.
NEW: In the @thestar.com, I wrote about how the most dangerous aspect of Alberta’s October referendum is the scapegoating of migrants for the province’s overcrowded schools and hospitals.
“Deciding … if this referendum and their actions constitutes treason requires us to understand its conspiratorial foundations, its connections to the global far right, and its malign intentions for the future of Canada.”

Europe’s biggest economy, Germany, has committed to phasing out fossil fuels by 2045.
The plans include ramping up renewable energy from 55% to 80% of electricity generation by 2030.
My latest column is out today in @nationalobserver.com.web.brid.gy, in which I explain how the “new climate denialism” is holding back progress in the fight of our lives, and how PM Mark Carney has become its lead practitioner.
Seniors who were protesting Mark Carney’s Bill c39 and fast tracking of environmental reviews arrested and charged with trespassing on Parliament Hill.
NDP Leader Avi Lewis says Carney’s government is “flooding the zone.” “We are in a crisis moment. We’re under economic attack from the United States and we need a crisis response,” Lewis said. 1/2

I think it's ill-advised and anti-democratic to introduce an omnibus bill, cite a crisis, and rush major changes to labour and environmental law. It's going to provoke aggressive resistance and risks, ironically, slowing down the projects the government is so keen on. It's going to be a huge mess.
