“If we can have arguments like this,” said a friend who fled Haiti in 2024, “it means we’re still alive.” Pooja Bhatia for @equatormag.bsky.social on Haiti’s famed Oloffson Hotel, where I used to file my stories. www.equator.org/articles/hot... @bhatiap.bsky.social

”As the fog of crisis settled on the capital, the Oloffson sometimes seemed like a beacon, pointing towards the future, its very existence promising to make good on the popular post-quake motto: ‘Haiti will not perish’."

Jeez. The court may have stopped some third-country removals at the last second yesterday, but ICE recalibrated quickly. Sept. 24 saw the most ICE flights+removals in the months I've been keeping a daily log. --at least 90 flights --at least 18 removals, including Haiti --plus a stop at Gitmo

Protest that endures, I think, is moved by a hope far more modest than that of public success: namely, the hope of preserving qualities in one's own heart and spirit that would be destroyed by acquiescence. Wendell Berry, What Are People For?

JUST IN: The Philadelphia-based 3rd Circuit has rejected ICE's unprecedented expansion of mandatory detention — the eighth straight appeals court to reject the Trump administration's approach as the issue hurtles toward SCOTUS. s3.documentcloud.org/documents/28...

SHWARTZ, Circuit Judge.
The Government appeals the District Courts’ orders to
release Gabriel Antonio Buele Morocho and Wanderson Lopes
De Andrade (together, who had been held in
immigration custody without bond hearing. Because their
detentions without hearings violated the Immigration and
Nationality Act (“INA”) and due process, we will affirm.
Buele Morocho, citizen of Ecuador, and Lopes De
Andrade, citizen of Brazil, entered the United States without
inspection in 2001 and 2014, respectively. In late 2025 and
early 2026, respectively, they were arrested by United States
Immigration and Customs Enforcement and detained without
bond under U.S.C. 1225(b)(2)(A).
