Interested in a PhD in Theoretical evolutionary ecology / statistics? A position is open (again) in my lab.

"Theoretical and statistical modeling of eco-evolutionary feedback loops from abundance-phenotype time series"

Details and application: emploi.cnrs.fr/Offres/Docto...

Illustration on an eco-evo feedback loop. The environment drives how selection affects individuals, while individual genotypes and phenotypes affect the environment (typically, by modifying the population density).

The super cool Anne Carson got this year's Nobel Prize in Literature! 💛 Whoever is sitting at the committee for the past years should stick around for a few more.

Why care about weird animal behaviors?

Just out as an advanced publication, my contribution to the next Frans de Waal special issue in Behaviour @degruyterbrill.bsky.social.

Unusual behaviors are a recurring theme in my career, and I much enjoyed writing this perspective!

When does“variance explained” actually mean causation?

In our new preprint, Olli Saarela and I develop graph-based causal variance decompositions. The framework clarifies when components of an ordered variance decomposition have causal interpretations.

For those of you at #ISBE2026, I will be presenting some of my work tomorrow (Friday the 24th) at 13:15, in the Auditorium Agnelli. Would love to see you there!

Title slide: "Inferring the causes of animal social network structure from time-series data", Ben Kawam, ISBE 2026, July 24th, 2026.
Features a drawing by Laure Pigeon.State transition diagram for four dyadic behavioural states: (i) no body contact; (ii) body contact without grooming; (iii) grooming from a to b; (iv) grooming from b to a.
Each state is illustrated by a watercolor painting painting created by S. M. Pereira & J. von Nordheim.
@benkawam.bsky.socialNov 12, 2025, 11:54 AM

New paper!

We propose a framework to empirically study animal social relationships by modelling social network (SN) data as time-series—that is, without the need to aggregate them over time.

www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Each dyad (a, b) moves through four discrete states over time, represented by coloured circles. The dyad remains in a given state for a certain duration, or "holding time", before transitioning to a new state according to state-specific transition probabilities, indicated by arrows showing all possible (non-zero) transitions. Paintings by Sofia M. Pereira & Judith von Nordheim.
