#HistSTM & #HistSci friends: Did you enjoy Sponsel & Sutton's @jhistbiol.bsky.social article on Photograph 49?

If so, I highly recommend @byjessicadavies.bsky.social's essay on the subject, which features additional pages from Franklin's notebooks & Wilkins's correspondence!

I would highly recommend, if you haven't read it, reading my narrative non-fiction novel 'Rosalind', published in the US as 'The English Chemist', 2024, which tells the story and significance of Franklin's lost photograph 49.

(I published this article, above, in January and pitched it to Springer's Nature journal last November.)

As the footnote in the Springer paper alludes, I discovered this image and have been writing about it for the last year. It is ironic that Franklin was also cited in a footnote in Watson and Crick's paper. You can read more here: www.jessiemillsauthor.com/journalism/p...

Quote from my narrative non-fiction novel Rosalind: ‘Societies are oiled with the unpaid, unaccounted for, work of women. It is the very glue that binds us together, and yet we are blind to it; a woman’s work remains invisible.’

My article is cited in the footnote of this scientific paper on Photograph 49. It is somewhat ironic that Rosalind Franklin was also noted in the footnote of Watson and Crick's paper on the double helix in 1953, but not credited for her interpretation of Photo 51.

Me too!

Ceri, you should read 'Rosalind', it uncovers the story of Photograph 49 and its significance.

@byjessicadavies.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 8:43 PM

I'm disappointed this is framed as 'exciting new historical work' when I wrote about Photograph 49 extensively in January, and the discovery underpins my book Rosalind/The English Chemist.

@byjessicadavies.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 9:46 AM

The Springer article is both vindicating, but also a direct copy of my interpretation; which was missed due to a major historical bias towards Watson and Crick and their interpretation rather than Franklin's own work. (As well as mislabelling.) My focus on her work brought it to light. #photograph49

Thanks for the compliment @adamrutherford.bsky.social and @matthewcobb.bsky.social. Do you mean my article from January? Photo 49 is featured in my book Rosalind/The English Chemist published 2024. Rights. www.jessiemillsauthor.com/journalism/p...

It happens again. A woman's finding is ripped off. I would like to point out that I pitched an article to Nature journal on Photograph 49 on 17 December 2025, which you can read here: www.jessiemillsauthor.com/journalism/p...

Good to see Foreign Secretary presenting the findings of the suppressed Joint Intelligence Report on ecosystem collapse to other governments. But when is it going to be shared with the rest of us? We can’t prepare for what we don’t know - it should be published in full

The sort of age where people start talking in the language of barely coded biological determinism, before your career has even peaked 😉.

Very kind, thank you. Serves me right for self pity -- even the most dedicated feminists can fall prey to it.
