The ROAD to Housing Act’s reforms are positive moves, but beg the question: are they enough to shift the basic nature of the way the housing market works? NHLP CEO @shamusroller.bsky.social talked to @shelterforce.bsky.social about what more needs to be done to guarantee affordable homes for all.

A Shelterforce headline questions whether the ROAD to Housing Act will deliver.

Exerpt says: "HUD’s staff has been hobbled by cuts from the Trump administration’s “deferred resignations” in April 2025, in which the administration spent billions of dollars paying workers to resign, as well as more layoffs during the government shutdown last year. HUD is currently operating with 5,800 employees, according to Federal News Network, compared to 8,800 before the second Trump administration began.

“A lot of the most experienced people at the agencies have left, and that creates real challenges for making these programs work,” Shamus Roller says. Implementing all the programs in the law might require a new federal administration re-staffing the agency. A HUD spokesperson did not address whether the agency would increase hiring to implement the law’s provisions."

Evidence shows that strict policies like work requirements and time limits cause families to lose desperately needed assistance - without increasing employment. That’s why we’re fighting back against the Trump administration’s attempt to destroy the federal housing programs.

👏WIN FOR CA TENANTS: Thanks to Asm. @matthaneysf.bsky.social and @governor.ca.gov Newsom, we just passed a new state law preventing Trump’s HUD from kicking poor and working families out of their homes through strict work requirements and time limits!

Trump’s HUD wants to put their tenants at risk of flooding. Losing their home to flooding may also mean losing their assistance – and even becoming homeless. We’re urging HUD to preserve crucial flood protections. Read on: www.nhlp.org/national-hou...

National Housing Law Project graphic headline urging HUD to preserve crucial flood protections, with a boxed quote about flooding harming low-income families and the NHLP logo on a blue and yellow background.

Title reads: "National Housing Law Project Urges HUD to Preserve Crucial Flood Protections"

Quote reads: “Flooding events have become more frequent and widespread, and put the health, safety, and livelihood of low-income families at risk. HUD should work toward increasing the resilience of HUD-assisted properties. This proposed rule does the opposite.”

Large-scale federal public housing didn’t become permanent until the passage of the Housing Act of 1937. Here are a few ways our elected leaders can keep us safely and securely housed - and preserve deeply affordable homes in the federal housing programs today.
