it seems some good capacitors are necessary on the breadboard.

i ordered five bucks of stuff from aliexpress:

an ATmega1284 on a breadboard, plugged into an arduino uno. the uno is being used as an ISP to program the 1284. it looks very fiddly.

Project Update October 2026 The current points of focus in the project are: Coming up with a text editor you can type into a Tiny BASIC interpreter by hand. Something around 200 to 300 lines of code, and allows, say, a couple of pages of text of free RAM, for the user to do serious work within […]

project update post. the project has been exploring BASIC for some time. BASIC is indeed a general purpose programming language. it can be used to create anything one can think of. it is possible to run BASIC on contemporary hardware, from desktops to micro-controllers. the original purpose […]

"Konilo is a small, pragmatic personal computing system written in Forth and running on a tiny virtual computer. A complete system consists of an ilo vm, an image file ("rom") with the Konilo system, and a set of blocks for storage of code and data. ilo provides a portable MISC computer with […]

given the ubiquity of the commodore 64, and its recent re-entering manufacturing, it kind of makes sense for me to support it with the people's permacomputer project. the hardware the project currently supports is the LILYGO TTGO VGA32, an ESP32 based board. it is considerably cheaper than a […]

@permacomputer VIC EDITYPE BASIC text editor research log.

I have been studying the core loop of the program.

What happens is a tight loop around:

120 GET C$:IF C$="" THEN GOTO 120

And then after we test for special menu characters, we echo the character, using a semicolon to prevent a […]

Research has continued on VIC EDITYPE, for the purpose of writing a more idiomatic ~5KB Tiny BASIC text editor.

The intention is to publish this under the umbrella of the peoples @permacomputer project.

The way text entry works is straightforward.

Editing is a little crude, you step through […]

"You may be old enough to remember the 1980s home computer boom. Your computer booted directly into BASIC, and that's what you learned to program with. That BASIC would have features like string handling and arrays. It would have a FOR loop structure for counting. And if you were very lucky, it […]

we have been thinking about Tiny BASIC proper, the one without arrays or FOR/NEXT, etc. perhaps the next step is to attempt to write 'serious' software using its limited command set. games would be reasonably easy, but text editors not so much, due to the lack of array variables.

new Dandelion BASIC devlog in this post we discuss where development is up to. we have successfully been able to encode the original TBX interpretive language program into a new format that will be easier to implement for the Arduino. the next step is getting the "execution engine" going […]

Dandelion BASIC devlog So I have managed to encode the Tiny BASIC Extended interpretive language program into a nice bytecode that makes sense to me, and will be easy to process. Currently that bytecode looks like: Byte 0, the instruction bitmask, helps with dispatch. Byte 1, 2, the 16 bit […]

please follow this forum thread for more discursive discussion coming up on Dandelion BASIC

- how the execution routine is supposed to work
- how to set up avr-gcc and GNU assembler
- how to use […]

big problems with Dandelion BASIC today. it turns out you cannot do mathematical symbol operations using .byte directive inside avr-gcc. so, macros like this: .equ ML_CALL, 0b11000000 .macro CALL label .byte ((hi8(\label)) | (ML_CALL)), lo8(\label) .endm cannot be done. ...which means the […]
