Our university also made a press release about Brandon Mak et al.'s recent paper. Read it all below 🕊️

New paper by our own Brandon Mak and colleagues, who investigated impacts of dietary supplementation in food-scarce environments on nesting behavior in feral pigeons. Asymmetrical responses, with females benefiting from supplements, while males become less invested in nests.

Nice talk by BSc thesis student Felix Freese today. Felix investigated ant communities in Munich, and showed clear relationships between city greenness/imperviousness and ant abundance/community composition. Very nice work, congrats on finalizing your thesis 🐜🏠🏨🌳

Wolfgang Weisser presented his ideas on embracing the data creator. In the age of open data availability and wide data usage, he argues, it is still important to involve those that produced the data, both from a data quality perspective and perhaps even as a matter of scientific integrity?

We're glad to hear that many people are thinking about these things. It's somehow a touchy subject for many, but nevertheless an important one for ensuring high quality science and data management. Thanks for sharing.

Brandon Mak presented a nice poster on the ecology of city pigeons, investigating how various stressors influence their behaviour.

Zoé Hentschel presented her work on urban greenness impacts on urban ant communities. Cities often house a surprising number of ant species, so understanding what makes them tick (in cities) is quite insightful.

Xia Yao presented her poster on the interactive impacts of urban ownership and urban building categories on green inequality in Munich, testing whether a luxury effect for biodiversity in cities exists.

Time flies at NSO GfÖ 26. So many nice talks and a vibrant poster session today. Of course also including several of our team members 🙂. A selection below!

@terrecolgroup.bsky.socialSep 15, 2026, 8:45 AM

@robinheinennl.bsky.social talked about the relative impacts of plant growth, plant chemistry, mutualistic relationships and competition as drivers of aphid communities on tansy.

@terrecolgroup.bsky.socialSep 15, 2026, 8:41 AM

Elikplim Setordjie talked about her findings on the role of chemodiversity and 'chemical abundance' on the insect communities found on tansy.

@terrecolgroup.bsky.socialSep 15, 2026, 8:39 AM

Meret Pundsack gave her talk on the role of different urban stressors on habitat connectivity in urban blackbirds.

@terrecolgroup.bsky.socialSep 15, 2026, 8:37 AM

Basile Finand @basilefinand.bsky.social gave his talk on fragmentation impacts on carabids and ants.

As every year, our group also attends the GfÖ annual meeting, this year jointly organized with NSO Oikos in Odense Denmark. Many group members give their talks and posters, with several already filling slits yesterday.

New paper out, featuring our collaboration with colleagues in Melbourne. In this work, Kiss et al. highlight human-animal interactions, particularly focusing on the use of specific building features by Australian wildlife. Read below:

🦗🌾 New #BAAE article: How long do grassland arthropods need to recover after mowing? AI camera traps across 27 grasslands show recovery often takes 8 weeks, not days, depending on taxa and nearby unmown refuges. 🐝
