I grew up in one of the flattest countries on the planet at sea level. Over the past seven years I've grown quite fond of the beautiful mountains so close to home (on good days I can see the Alps from my living room).

Excited by the eruption of nutcrackers in Finland etc. This one was in Falsterbo Sweden late September. I showed the photo to the owner of the telescope who missed it as photographing another at his feet! Hope some head to the UK. Loved seeing one in Westleton in 1985.

My son just found this absolute beauty on our hike!

Are they faucet handles, or tomato shaped chimneys?

@robinheinennl.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 7:09 AM

I've seen mainstream supermarkets use AI generated tomatoes instead of pictures of real tomatoes in their ads. At this point, nothing surprises me anymore.

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Green, any birds or backgrounds that have Green in them set by @helenbennett.bsky.social - early arrivals for the season but managed to capture Short -Eared Owls this week at Aust Warth salt marshes πŸ¦‰πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸͺΆπŸ¦‰ #ukbirding #ECK

The short-eared owl (Asio flammeus) is a medium-sized, ground-dwelling bird of prey about the size of a crow, measuring roughly 34 to 42 cm (13 to 17 inches) long with a wide wingspan of about a meter (90 to 105 cm).

Key Physical Features

β€’ Eyes and Face: They have striking, bright yellow eyes wrapped in dark, dramatic black rings that look like heavy eyeliner or dark goggles. Their face is rounded and pale.

β€’ Head and "Ears": They have a rounded, fluffy head with tiny, nearly invisible feather tufts on top (their namesake "short ears") that usually lie flat and cannot actually be seen easily.

β€’ Body and Plumage: Their top feathers are a mottled mix of warm brown, buff, and yellowish-tan, which helps them blend right into dry grass and moorland. Their underparts are paler with fine brown streaks.

β€’ Wings in Flight: Their wings are long and broad. When they fly low over open fields, their erratic, buoyant movement looks a bit like a giant, graceful moth or butterfly.

Behavior and Lifestyle

β€’ Daytime Hunters: Unlike many owls that hide at night, short-eared owls often hunt during the daytime, dawn, and dusk.

β€’ Where They Live: They prefer wide-open, treeless spaces like moorlands, rough coastal grasslands, marshes, and sand dunes.

β€’ On the Ground: Instead of living in trees or high branches, they build their nests and rest directly on the ground hidden in tall grass.

β€’ Sound and Movement: They glide silently just a few feet above the ground listening for small field voles and mice, occasionally making soft hoots or rapid wing-clapping sounds during courtship.

The Bearded Reedlings (Panurus biarmicus) at Lake Velence were very active today.. flying around and calling like crazy. This male stopped just long enough for me to get a nice portrait. #BirdingHungary #reedlings #BirdsSeenIn2026

Not weird, sounds great!

Nice. The picture really does both species justice...

This is just funny. Every conversation I have tried with LLMs has resulted in me getting frustrated and angry about the inconsistency and gaslighting. I guess I'm not alone in this. When are they going to protect users instead of the models?

Sometimes you don't really know what you think until you try to write it down. Why would you want to skip that part?

@robinheinennl.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 6:19 PM

This is one to read in full with your own eyes and brains.

I think my main issue is not with AI, but with laziness, and the blindness to see how laziness frees time in the producer of *AI stuff* but costs additional time for teachers, supervisors, reviewers, editors, etc.
