Getting to have this conversation with JJ was a treasure. Seldom do I get to talk about disability like this. JJ was so thoughtful and generous that we talked for another hour after the recorder was off. This morning I learned that JJ passed away shortly after we talked. I'm grateful we met.

If you haven't read @jjpionke.bsky.social's obituary yet, do it now. He names names about the institutions who let him down as he tried to navigate the tenure process while disabled. jj-pionke-memorial.org

JJ was a champion for both libraries and disabled folks (as well as the intersection of the two). I was lucky enough to work with him on accessibility of an organization we were members of and to later co-author a paper with him about that project. His loss is felt immensely. Thank you, JJ. 💙

We will be releasing JJ's final interviews in October. He was incredibly passionate about this project, about promoting and celebrating the work of disabled creatives -- theorists, novelists, poets, artists -- and about letting them tell their own disability stories in their own words.

For anyone who is missing JJ and wants to take comfort/remember him through what he left behind, here is one of my favorite interviews he did, with his friend Kate Bornstein and Caitlin Sullivan. -js

"JJ Pionke, librarian, library and information studies educator, and advocate for people with disabilities, has died."

One of the best of us has left this world, moving on, I hope, to a kind of peace.

JJ, you will be missed. Fiercely.
