Science - always and particularly in the 21st century - is a collaborative human enterprise. IceCube is another example, with LIGO, of a successful long-term investment by the National Science Foundation, which has been subject to vicious attacks and recissions since 2025.

That's a wrap on #PPRM2026 ! Had a lot of fun with a community of researchers I really admire and appreciate, and was happy to have the chance to show what we work on. You can read the preprint on some of what I presented here: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Nature did a nice, accessible write up of a recent piece I wrote with @mjcrockett.bsky.social, Kevin Gross, and @carlbergstrom.com. Also, check out Carl's more detailed thread (with link to the paper in both). "Scientists using LLMs will โ€˜do more, less well'"

1. Weโ€”@eduede.bsky.social, @mjcrockett.bsky.social, Kevin Gross, and Iโ€”have a new preprint on the arXiv today, based on ideas that emerged during an @sfiscience.bsky.social workshop in November 2024: The unintended consequences of large language models as a labor-augmenting technology in science.

But even if LLMs perform on par with human experts at ...

Xu Wang (Schaller's lab), giving a talk at #PPRM2026 about new systemins in tomato, reminds us of the 1991 Science paper from Clarence Ryan's lab that basically started the whole field: 2 kg of tomato leaves to finally extract 1 ug of systemin. Amazing biochemistry.

At Peptide Receptor Meeting #PPRM2026. A theme that came back twice is re-evaluation of old published results. We know about ABP1 and the systemin receptor, but there were two other examples today: WAK1 perception of OGs, and BSU1 Tyr dephosphorylation of BIN2 in BR signalling. #PlantScience

New preprint!

There have been quite a few papers about RLP and RLK receptors, but none of them have a truly reproducible annotation pipeline (including my own...)...
We finally made such a pipeline and look more systematically at RLPs within tomato.
