My group's paper out on the cover of Science!

Native Hawaiians are most closely related to the Rapanui of distant Easter Island 😮

Proud of my students the two co-first authors Cole Shanks & former MS student Edward Huang and 3rd author group member Chris Thomassin.

Thank you! Yes, it's so interesting how an animal's behavior is so tightly linked to its social rank. I don't think we know exactly how or at what point in their lives their rank is established. Hopefully we'll be able to address some of these questions in our future work!

…and here are a few naked mole-rats from four different colonies, telling us about themselves in their own body language

Grateful to everyone on this great team!

How does individual behavior reflect the organization of the society it belongs to?

Excited to share our new paper with @ishmailsaboor.bsky.social & team: a naked mole-rat’s spontaneous behavior in isolation predicts its identity, colony membership, and rank within its colony.

Excited to see our fMRI paper is out, led by Itamar Kahn’s lab. Our grad students, Amir Lawen and Bella Succi, in collab with Darcy Peterka, built a setup for simultaneous fMRI and dopamine fiber photometry in awake behaving mice. We learned some new biology too.

Each naked mole-rat has its own behavioral identity! The way it moves reveals who it is, its colony, and its social rank! Great work from @yukihaba.bsky.social

Thanks so much Mohammed!!

Excited to share my lab’s latest preprint led by postdoc @yukihaba.bsky.social and grad student Ryan Schwark. We surprisingly find that spontaneous behavior in isolation predicts a naked mole-rat’s identity, its colony membership, and even rank within its colony.

Proud to share our new work with @marcelomattar.bsky.social and @leaduncker.bsky.social, newly accepted to #NeurIPS2026 arxiv.org/abs/2609.17042. This paper is a precursor to a forthcoming follow up work that I hope will be one of the biggest papers of my career.

When a fish sees the world move, it immediately swims with it. This is the optomotor response: a visual reflex found across animals that helps us maintain our position and orientation as our surroundings appear to drift. 🐟👀

I'm excited to share our new preprint: Generation of a transgenic cephalopod
tinyurl.com/pc86jxz8

Cephalopods (cuttlefish, octopus & squid) are crazy critters that dynamically camouflage to their surroundings by changing the color, pattern, & texture of their skin, which they control w their brain.

I am excited to announce that I will start the Brain Origins Lab at the Crick in March 2027! Using acoels as a model system, the lab will study how animal brains evolve, and how innovations in brain organisation enable new computational abilities and the evolution of complex behaviour.

What's behind this tidal wave of epidemics? In the largest study ever conducted on emerging infectious diseases, we show that the popular explanation - "our relationship with nature is out of balance" - doesn't hold up. Out now in Nature, after half a decade of work: www.nature.com/articles/s41...
