#AXL acts as a brake on #bone-building cells. Blocking it increased bone formation and bone mass in healthy mice. Cell experiments linked the response to Isg15 and Erk, two signals that support cell maturation.πŸ˜€

In cell and rabbit steroid-induced #osteonecrosis models, a coral-inspired scaffold enabled repair: carbon #nanotubes activated PI3K-AKT to shift macrophages from inflammatory M1 to reparative M2, while nano-hydroxyapatite promoted mineralization, angiogenesis and #bone formation.πŸ‘‡

Fusing cells need a burst of energy. In mice and cell models, angiogenin moved into mitochondria, helped process mitochondrial RNA and support ATP production. Without angiogenin, muscle cells and bone-resorbing osteoclasts fused poorly, disrupting muscle and bone homeostasis.πŸ‘‡ @brjournal.bsky.social

Why does breast #cancer so often spread to #bone? This review explains how tumor cells prepare and hijack the bone microenvironment, disrupt bone remodeling and suppress immunity, creating a vicious cycle in which bone loss fuels further #tumor growth.πŸ‘‡

Not all #bone-marrow stromal cells are equally good at forming bone. Across 26 donors, higher #ITGA11 levels marked cells with greater bone-forming potential. Sorting by ITGA11 separated stronger from weaker bone-forming cells, suggesting a useful marker for bone #regeneration.πŸ‘‡

More #mineral does not always make #bone stronger. In mice with high bone mass #osteogenesis imperfecta, abnormal collagen processing disrupted the bone matrix, producing thinner, poorly aligned mineral particles and bones that were highly mineralized but extremely brittle.πŸ‘‡

#Osteoarthritis treatment may one day do more than ease pain. This review looks at new ways to reduce #inflammation, repair #joint #tissue and remove harmful ageing cells, with the long-term goal of matching treatment to each patient’s disease.πŸ‘‡

Some ageing-related cells may help with healing. In mice with Achilles tendon injury, these cells briefly appeared and supported collagen repair, new blood vessels and nerve growth. #JMJD3 helped turn on repair genes and improve tendon strength.

#Irisin carries messages from muscle to #bone, but its effects may differ by sex. This review finds generally positive effects on bone-forming cells, mixed findings for bone-resorbing cells and #osteocytes, and a need to consider sex in therapeutic research.πŸ‘‡
