Meanwhile in the UK. Was. "Let's make our universities financially dependent on overseas students." Then. "Let's make overseas students feel increasingly unwelcome." Now. "Screw that, let's just withdraw our offers so they don't come in the first place." Next. "Who needs universities anyway?"

Looking forward to kicking off the LSE's brand-new Political Methodology seminar! I will present new work with @tarasenkogeorgy.bsky.social and Andrey Tkachenko on detecting batch-generated responses in survey data delivered by third-party vendors. Get in touch for the Zoom link or the draft.

Researchers who outsource survey fieldwork to third-party vendors cede oversight over the collection process. We present evidence that this practice is vulnerable to AI-generated responses within the vendor's pipeline. Analyzing an online survey of Russian residents in 2026, we detect a sharp discontinuity in data quality as the fieldwork deadline approached. Several distinct indicators, spanning open-ended text patterns, completion times, and closed-ended response distributions, shift together during the affected period. The patterns are consistent with coordinated batch generation rather than scattered respondent-level AI use. While the current literature on AI contamination in surveys focuses on respondent-side threats, our case highlights a risk that data providers within an outsourced data collection pipeline may use AI to fabricate responses. We discuss conditions that amplify supply-side risks of AI responses and propose practical safeguards for researchers who outsource fieldwork.

Ever wondered what attributes are relevant in your conjoint experiment? And what assumptions you need to estimate it? Asya and I got you covered. In a new working paper we propose the APNS: the probability that an attribute's level change is necessary and sufficient for the selection of a profile.

In other words, a 10 percent contraction in one of Britain’s most successful exports. If it were steel or fish or other infinitely less profitable sectors, people would be having a meltdown.

🚨🚨 New working paper! What happens to citizens’ democratic priorities when power changes hands? We (w/ Natasha Wunsch) explore this by drawing on a three-wave panel survey and a repeated conjoint experiment fielded around Hungary’s April 2026 elections (1/4, link at the end)...

A thoughtful provocation: not disclosing about LLM use or nonuse is either dishonest (if you actually did use it) or reflects carelessness (if you actually didn’t use it).

Glad to see emerging scholars tapping into understudied cases like Latvia, where the far right doesn't fit the "usual" template and one can learn a lot about exclusionary politics

My thoughts on the Latvian elections for LSE blogs. Latvia steers right, as radical right parties massively increase the number of their seats and major centre parties lose support. However, the radical right in Latvia differs from that in many other European countries.

Our article with @grigopop.bsky.social and @jacobtucker.bsky.social is now out in @bjpols.bsky.social! This has been a very long journey from the initial draft to publication, so we are very excited 😀 I'll summarize our findings in the next few of posts in the thread.

Lucan Way and I have been writing about competitive authoritarianism for more than 25 years. We never thought we'd write this piece.
