Last week, we were pleased to announce our 2027 Pavilion Poetry collections. Today we're sharing a little more about Martha Sprackland's new title, Question to the Creatures. This is a formidable second collection of doubt, darkness and attention, illuminated by torchlight, candleglow and wildfire.

Black background with yellow text reading 'Question to the Creatures interrogates confinement, doubt and attention, drawing on the Spanish mystic John of the Cross, whose dark night of the soul, for the poet–translator, comes in the small hours of new motherhood. Full of curiosity and attention, illuminated by torchlight, candleglow and wildfire; a formidable second collection.' To the right is the cover image of Martha Sprackland's Question to the Creatures.

After Rilke’s sudden death at the end of 1926, Russian poet Marina Tsvetaeva wrote two works addressed to Rilke that sit among the great European modernist poems. You can read my translations of them and a creative essay in Tsvetaeva ‘27 @pavilionpoetry.bsky.social
