Forgetting, too, has its place. Carl Phillips, from the Winter 2026 issue of The Fiddlehead

Ever After

As I understand it, it's for me to decide, now, what exactly happened.
The sea.
Like a rolling meadow.
Flowers populate a meadow.
They don't define it.
Forgetting, too, has its place.
The sea with the light on top of it; their backlit shapes; their faces.
