Greetings from #Oslo! 🇳🇴

A large museum delegation is presenting at #TDWG2026, sharing how we work with biodiversity data – from collection and #digitisation to linking and sharing. 🌐

We explore data pipelines and resilient research infrastructures to better understand #biodiversity! 🪲

𝘕𝘺𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘣𝘢𝘪𝘤𝘢 is also the first European representative of the bat family Nycteridae.

➡️ The finding also shows how monitoring methods shape what we detect. Researchers now need to assess the population, roosts and potential threats!

The discovery was made on Pantelleria. 📍 𝘕𝘺𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘣𝘢𝘪𝘤𝘢 is a low-flying "whispering bat" with exceptionally faint echolocation calls. Targeted recordings detected echolocation and social calls from two bats, suggesting a small, previously undetected population. 📸 @berlinbatlab.bsky.social 2/3

200-year-old mystery finally solved: an African bat is living in Europe! 🦇

19th-century records suggested that Nycteris #bats occurred in Sicily, but their presence remained unconfirmed. Now, researchers have found the first robust evidence of 𝘕𝘺𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘣𝘢𝘪𝘤𝘢 in Europe.
