Antibiotic resistance mutations with fitness costs in rich medium can have no cost, or even a fitness benefit, in synthetic urine. Lovely preprint from @rachelmwheatley.bsky.social's lab, with data linking the growth advantage to the presence of oxaloacetate www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... #MIcroSky

Bumblebees can carry phage to flowers during pollination, potentially providing a new delivery route for phage-based control of crop disease. Cool work from @mojganrabiey.bsky.social & colleagues at @warwicklifesci.bsky.social www.agnavigator.com/Article/2026...

Woohoo!!!

Awesome, thanks. We may give FITC-elastin a go too, using the same procedure.

Did you use it in any of your publications btw? (Apologies if I have totally missed this).

@friendlymicrobe.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 3:37 PM

Oh brill, thank you! I'd not seen that one, so good to have it flagged up with a review :)

#Pseudomonas quorum sensing people - has anyone found a replacement for Sigma's elastin-Congo red for elastase assays, now that it's been discontinued? #MicroSky

OK, this is wild. In September 2023, geophysicists across the world started monitoring a very odd signal coming from the ground under them. It was picked up in the Arctic. And Antarctica. It was detected everywhere, every 90 seconds, as regular as a metronome, for *nine days*. What the HELL? 1/

How do Burkholderia multivorans bacteria adaptively evolve during infections of the cystic fibrosis airway?

A longtime collab and intensive study of 8 patients links bacterial adaptations to disease progression. Our findings also unite prior studies.

Are you seeing them around Brum? They successfully spread into north Shropshire (where my family are) from Wales, so you’re in a prime spot to get them moving in from both directions.

@friendlymicrobe.bsky.socialOct 3, 2026, 6:39 PM

Thanks! A friend also just said they’d seen juveniles with very pale undersides, so it seems likely. Having lived in Oxon for a while, I’ve probably seen approx. 3bn of them, but never a pale one 🤷🏻‍♀️ It’s brill to see them spreading, they’ve been infrequent but regular sights here for a few years now.

Bird nerds, can red kites have a colour morph with a pale belly? Saw a large, kite-shaped raptor riding thermals very high up today but it had a whitish underside. Definitely not a buzzard. (Or had something interesting wandered from a falconry display at Warwick/Kenilworth Castle?)
