Excellent evening earlier this week celebrating the publication of Dan Jones latest gift to the history community, 'Castles: A Fortified History of the World'. This is justly going to fly off shelves as it should. And yes, that's Mike Skinner 🤯.

#OTD 1401, Henry IV had a wine-loving Welsh landowner put to death in Llandovery. This is the story of how (allegedly) one brave man 'willingly preferred death to treachery’, for which he is commemorated today with a haunting statue. Read now on 'Hiraeth'

Was Roland de Vielleville an illegitimate son of Henry VII and therefore Henry VIII's OLDER brother? When researching my Tudor family biography, 'Son of Prophecy', I asked myself this question. You can find my thoughts below:

A Welsh dragon, likely carved before the end of 1485 or early 1486. To touch this, that Henry VII, Elizabeth of York, and perhaps even Henry VIII did, in their most private moments, is just one of the absurd perks of an historian More soon on my Substack 'Hiraeth'

It's funny - you find the best things when you least expect it. And I was not expecting to find some Tudor-themed stained glass a few weeks ago that left me confused and excited. Let me tell you more in today's newsletter, which should be in your inboxes now. And if you're not following, why not

Social media is great for sharing pictures, but not for deeper dives into history, the places and the people that shaped our past. That's why I've developed a community of thousands over on Substack. It's free to read my articles, watch my videos, or to join the chat.

🚨 FESTIVAL EPISODE🚨
Tudor propaganda didn't appear from nowhere. 👀📜 @nathenamin.bsky.social argues the Yorkists were already using political spin, imagery and accusations to justify their power. 🏰⚔️ Nathen was speaking at Gloucester History Festival.

#OTD 16 September 1400, Owain Glyn Dŵr and his Tudur cousins of Anglesey rose in revolt against English rule. It began a decade-long military struggle for independence armed with an ideological vision for a unified Wales that took 600 more years to (partly) secure.

What an extraordinary joy it was to have helped lead Alison Weir Tours' international group around Wales for 10 days. We really saw and did it all, exploring the glorious if often bloody past Wales has, from the Romans to the present day. Tour guiding is FUN!
