I watched a Taiwanese horror film called Incantation last night, it was kind of a mixed bag but had some great Buddhist folk horror imagery, just sadly let down by somewhat incoherent cutting.

Cregger's Resident Evil is a good example of "Fast Body Horror." In the 80s, a lot of Body Horror was "slow" because in order to execute a special effect, there was one gimmick per shot, so transformation sequences had many cuts and emphasized the mechanics of the gimmick.

I enjoyed Resident Evil (especially Abrams' performance), and I'm looking forward to more from Cregger, but I think this is basically correct as an analysis of the limitations of "fast body horror". Sometimes, maybe even often, practical constraints can make creative work better!

Do you know if there's any more information about the Paul Dewhurst on that memorial? It's a relatively unusual surname, although not that uncommon in Lancashire, so I'm curious whether he might be a distant relative of mine.
