I think the Nazis are just a very obvious example of a general trend where right-wingers are in love with an idealized mental image of their country that is perfect and eternally unchanging, and interpret the messy, complex, ever-changing reality of the country as a betrayal of that image.

One of the most pernicious misunderstandings about WW2 is "for all their faults, the Nazis at least loved Germany and its people." But... no they didn't! They REALLY fucking didn't! I struggle to think of a group that hated their country and the people living in it more than the Nazis did!

Yeah, it's sad. And, yeah, comes down to critical/independent thinking - a lot of voters just don't possess that, and instead vote with their lowest instincts (usually fear, stoked by right-wing campaigns). I don't know what the answer is, but it's clear major reforms are needed. :/

Voting systems need to be much better, too. The US's is particularly bad (FPTP & electoral college & gerrymandering). But Canada's and the UK's are awful too (FPTP). And of course, the right-wing controlling media and having all the money for basically unlimited campaigning... :/

I'm so torn about it. I think there needs to be some bar to clear, the problem is who gets to set that bar. :( Education and critical thinking are desperately needing to be better. Of course, the right-wing are happy to undermine both.
