At the Danish Consulate event in SF today, I was asked to demo SkyMapper. I pulled out my phone, connected to Volker’s telescope in Mainz, Germany, and observed NGC 891, ~30 million light-years away.

Start with the first 3 bodies proposed by the system. They are up and beautiful .

I’ve been an astronomer for 30 years, and there are still beautiful objects I’ve never observed. Tonight, from my sofa in San Francisco, I used S. Lancelle telescope in Caledonia, Wisconsin, through the SkyMapper network to observe the Bubble Nebula (NGC 7635) for the first time. Sharing your sky.
Captured today in broad daylight from San Francisco using SkyViewer on app.skymapper.io.
Dark nights are back in Finland! I used one of our Finnish telescopes for a 10-min observation of the Fireworks Galaxy (NGC 6946), 25 million light-years away.
Astronomy without borders!
Great news for astronomy! NASA selected PRIMA, a far-infrared space telescope, as the first Probe Explorer mission.
PRIMA will see through cosmic dust to study how planets form, galaxies evolve, and water and other key ingredients for planets emerge.
Launch: 2033!
🌎 A rocky world in another star’s habitable zone has an atmosphere — a first for astronomy.

Astronomy continues in Ukraine.
Astronomers in Kyiv detected a new outburst of the cataclysmic variable Gaia20cnt with a Unistellar eVscope, triggering follow-up with their 70-cm AZT-8 telescope.
Science continues despite the war.
If you can’t trust the data, you can’t trust the science. As AI makes fake observations easier to create, provenance matters more than ever. At Avalanche Summit NYC, our CEO @allplanets.bsky.social explained how blockchain can help make astronomical data verifiable from the moment it’s captured.
Across Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan and beyond, a new school year should be beginning. Instead, young people face destroyed schools, displaced teachers and another year stolen by war.
