SCO, BRICS, Trump-Xi: What does the spate of summits mean for India?

This year’s summit season reveals conflicting visions of global order (and India’s place in it), writes @chietigj.bsky.social for @thediplomat.com.

Great to have a full house for today's discussion on #BRICS, which analysed the outcomes from the weekend's Summit in New Delhi and discussed the ambitions, tensions and priorities of some of its individual members.

An eventful few days analyzing India’s #BRICS Summit and a string of bilaterals, notably #China-#India. I have been busy with several media, including @bloomberg.com, @cnbc.com, @theguardian.com, @channelnewsasia.bsky.social, among others. Here is one for @news.abc.net.au: youtu.be/UlALGZxpnXM?...

(5/5) India's engagement with the Middle East - noted by its participation in the #I2U2 and #IMEC - were built on the US-led regional architecture in the Middle East. But as US claims of forging a “New Middle East” falters, India needs to rethink its approach towards West Asia.

@chietigj.bsky.socialSep 15, 2026, 8:27 AM

(4/5) The pact has implications beyond the region as faultlines in South Asia and West Asia become more intertwined. A key watchpoint will be to see what position Saudi Arabia and Turkey take during future India-Pakistan hostilities. This comes as India deepens relations with Israel and the UAE.

@chietigj.bsky.socialSep 15, 2026, 8:26 AM

(3/5) Despite the hype (e.g. “Sunni NATO”), there are numerous ambiguities in the pact. It is unlikely to strengthen collective deterrence against any of the member states’ primary strategic adversaries: Iran, Israel, or India. This will limit cohesion and interoperability between its members.

@chietigj.bsky.socialSep 15, 2026, 8:24 AM

(2/5) Key watchpoints will be to see if the pact holds (given the highly fluid geopolitics of the Middle East); its operationalization (e.g. joint command structures); if membership expands to other countries (e.g. Egypt) and the role it plays in regional flashpoints (from Sudan to Yemen).

@chietigj.bsky.socialSep 15, 2026, 8:23 AM

(1/5) The pact comes at a time when confidence in the US-led security architecture in the #MiddleEast is waning. This has prompted efforts to develop more diversified security guarantees, in this case with Pakistan's nuclear weapons, Turkey's defence-industrial base and Saudi Arabia's economic heft.

Last month saw the announcement of a trilateral defence pact – the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement – between #Pakistan, #Turkey and #SaudiArabia. My article in @asia.nikkei.com discusses the implications for #India. Summary in the comments. @chasiapacific.bsky.social asia.nikkei.com/opinion/paki...

This weekend, India will host the #BRICS Summit in New Delhi. But what does India want from BRICS?

It wants to play the role of a bridging power between the West and the rest, writes @chietigj.bsky.social in his February op-ed for @foreignpolicy.com.

China's Xi Jinping and India's Narendra Modi are due to meet this weekend on the sidelines of the #BRICS Summit in New Delhi.

9/11 reshaped the world, my worldviews and my career. A turning point in every sense. Living in New York, the company I worked for lost over 300 people when the planes hit the World Trade Center. I began a career in finance, but the attacks led me to pivot towards a career in international relations

As Chinese President Xi Jinping visits India for the upcoming #BRICS Summit, I discussed the #China-#India relationship at the Great Britain-China Centre, covering the roots of hostility, key misconceptions about the relationship in the West and the trajectory of Sino-Indian relations.

@chietigj.bsky.socialSep 8, 2026, 1:01 PM

(6/6) Given the difficulties of collective action, the real action at the BRICS Summit could take place on its side-lines. In particular, Chinese President Xi Jinping's attendance at this year’s summit is a sign of further confidence building in the #China-India relationship.
