We report a human cell-free translation screen that identified NT-2, a Fusarium mycotoxin that blocks human ribosomes.

The surprise: NT-2 does binds the ribosome and pushes them into a dormant state.

We mutated every position of the gene. Variants that block assembly into the ribosome map to the uL18/uL5 interface and activate p53. These are exactly the variants that selection has purged from human populations. 3/4
