Front covers have the best conditions and treat translators impeccably.

@rahulbery.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 1:57 PM

just want to say that while I agree that putting names on front covers definitely helps emphasise the importance of translators, it’s no guarantee that a publisher treats them well in terms of pay, royalties or less tangible stuff. And the opposite is true: some presses who don’t put names on…

@rahulbery.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 1:53 PM

And also their pay rates are apparently pitiful, well below the already outdated Translator’s Association rate. it’s no surprise at all that they are open to dispense with pesky humans altogether.

I don’t think any translators are surprised by this, and not because of the covers thing (plenty of publishers don’t do it but still treat and pay translators well). Europa are notorious for not allowing translators to copyright (AFAIK they are the only anglophone publisher to do this)

How could they betray us like this!

@rahulbery.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 7:44 AM

not surprising tbh as they are notorious among translators for terrible pay and retaining copyright to the translation, which literally no other publisher does. Far worse than leaving names off covers and it’s entirely predictable they would embrace AI translation

EYE OF GOLIATH is an incredible WWI gothic novel, soaking in the ethers of early psychiatry, empire’s decay, the natural terrors of isolation & the sea to create a really tight and gripping tale of trauma, violence, doubles and shadows above and below. Also, there’s a badass evil black cormorant

To offer a recommendation, on the plane I read Diego Muzzio’s EYE OF GOLIATH

(out w/ @pushkinpress.com & translated by @rahulbery.bsky.social, whose other translation of CENTROEUROPA was just named a finalist for the National Book Award!)

& GOLIATH RIPS!!!

all the awards for CENTROEUROPA

@rahulbery.bsky.socialOct 6, 2026, 3:10 PM

Well this is quite exciting!

@rahulbery.bsky.socialOct 6, 2026, 3:10 PM

Fuck yeah!

@rahulbery.bsky.socialOct 6, 2026, 10:01 AM

Sure is. I had never checked before, naively hoping it had been founded by a homesick Kilkenny native, or especially that Kilkenny was a Norman or Saxon name that just happened to sound and be spelt the same. Wonder how many other towns in England were named for similar reasons?

@rahulbery.bsky.socialOct 6, 2026, 8:52 AM

‘The name "Kilkenny" in Gloucestershire is thought to have been derived from a nearby farm, originally named Kilkenny after the capture of Kilkenny town in Ireland by Cromwell in 1650.’ 😬

This always gets me but not as much as the tiny hamlet near where my wife is from in Gloucestershire called ‘Kilkenny’

Next up in our 2026 series of National Book Awards interviews, @vicenteluismora.bsky.social and @rahulbery.bsky.social on CENTROEUROPA, a “brilliant and unsettling” story set in 1820s rural Prussia. Read their interview on the longlisted novel here: wordswithoutborders.org/read/article...

At the top, “Words Without Borders” in white text and “77th National Book Awards” in red text over black textured background. On the right side, images of the book cover of CENTROEUROPA, author Vicente Luis Mora and translator Rahul Bery. Blue and white text on the left reads: “National Book Awards Interview: Vicente Luis Mora and Rahul Bery on CENTROEUROPA.” White text on the bottom left reads: “Other visions followed over the next few weeks, and then I met Redo, the main character, in a luminous corner of my mind. And I said to Redo, ‘Do you want to write a novel?’ Redo accepted, and then it all started.”

I love the vague but undeniable anti-American tone of the joke, among other things About it!

The recent introduction of the word soda into uk contexts to mean ‘pop’ as opposed to ‘fizzy water‘ really boils my piss

Jesus, imagine accepting the role of NI secretary. Wouldn’t be surprised if Bryant harboured some secret viceroy fantasies.
