Freelancing as a movement journalist can feel like an uphill battle. Lisa Armstrong, UC Berkeley journalism professor, will help us demystify the freelancing business at our virtual 10/29 workshop, The Business of Freelancing. Sliding scale, $0-$125. Register today at bit.ly/thefreelancingbiz!

I also LOVE how @pressonsouth.bsky.social's Freedomways fellows approached audience engagement in deeply creative ways. For example, Eden created a zine about Black birth workers in the South. She's also hosting a community panel with birth workers who appeared in her story. We truly love to see it.

And for her newsroom the @nashvillebanner.bsky.social, the brilliant Eden Turner reported this deeply important story about Black birth workers in the South:

From Louisiana, Edith Romero Velasquez reported this story, published on Monday by @prismreports.org, about the treatment of pregnant people in ICE custody. In her story, Edith also dives into how U.S. immigration law was shaped by eugenics.

Next up is this piece from Mo Viviane about how anti-trans bills coalesce with the Trump administration's Big Beautiful Bill to decimate healthcare for trans people in Kentucky, including those who are incarcerated:

As movement journalists, we can’t and won’t forget the more than 260 journalists killed during the genocide being carried out by Israel in Gaza. Bear witness to their stories by visiting “THE LIVING RECORD,” an oral archive by Writers Against the War on Gaza, at bit.ly/livingrecord.

For @prismreports.org, @us.theguardian.com & @enlacelatinonc.bsky.social, our fellowship coordinator, @tinavasquez.bsky.social, investigated Florida Orange Gold’s disregard for the health of their migrant farmworkers in North Carolina and Florida. Read the story at tinyurl.om/farmworkersheat.

Image description from Prism: “Daysi Romero Arellano and Carlos Vargas Moreno inside their home, in Raleigh, N.C., on Sept. 18, 2026. Vargas Moreno, a former farmworker on an H-2A temporary visa, experienced heat stroke while working in a field in 2022 that caused permanent injuries. He relies entirely on his wife for care.”

For @hammerandhope.bsky.social, our board member, Lisa Armstrong, writes about a movement in one rural middle Georgia town to protect Black ancestral land & resting places from a new railroad—a consequence of the dismantling of Black voting rights. Read at bit.ly/gavotingrights. 📸: Ray Spears

This is Carlos and Daysi. Their primary motivating factor for going public with their story is the hope that what happened to Carlos will not happen to other workers. [Photo by Kaoly Gutierrez]

NEW: H-2A worker Carlos Vargas Moreno experienced a catastrophic heat stroke when his employer, Florida Orange Gold, subjected him to unsafe working conditions. The same company was cited two years prior for the heat-related death of H-2A worker Carmen Sebastian Hernandez Mosqueda.

We support empowering trans narratives as an antidote to mainstream journalism that dehumanizes trans people. Our grantees, Salgu Wissmath (they/them) & Nicky Yeager (they/she) @bogusnic.bsky.social, collaborated on a story for @us.theguardian.com about a queer & trans youth summer camp in Texas. 🏳️‍⚧️

Headshot photos of Salgu and Nicky. Salgu’s photo shows a person with short, dark brown hair and reddish-brown rectangular glasses smiling warmly at the camera, wearing a light gray denim button-up shirt. They are photographed against a soft gray studio background. Nicky’s photo shows a person with short-cut hair & wearing hoop earrings and a cutoff sleeveless button-down shirt looking purposefully at the camera while sitting comfortably on a sofa. They are photographed in black and white in a living room with natural light and a house plant behind them.

This Hispanic & Latine Heritage Month, we remember Ruben Salazar (1928-1970), a Mexican American movement journalism ancestor. He was one of the first journalists to shine a light on the oppression of Chicanos & Mexican Americans and boldly pushed back against the myth of objectivity. 🎨: Billy Dee

There’s been an increase in deportations of Marshallese people from northwest Arkansas, and the org Chikin Melele is making sure this crisis doesn’t go uncovered. Our Southern Movement Media Fund recently awarded a grant to Chikin Melele to continue amplifying this critical issue.

A picture of Chikin Melele’s logo. A circular emblem in shades of blue, gold, and white. At its center, a rooster, hen, and two chicks stand on a sandy beach between coconut palm trees, with a stylized Pacific-centered world map clearly marking the Marshall Islands, colored with the Marshallese flag, including the flag’s 24-point star and orange and white diagonal stripes. The name CHIKIN MELELE appears prominently in gold lettering, with “Marshallese Information and News” below. Across the top is the Marshallese phrase, Bwe Enkab Ellowetak Kōn Aejemjem in Naan Ko Ad, which means, “To inspire action through the power of our words.”Headshot photos of Melanie and Michael. Melanie’s photo shows a woman with long dark hair and pink tortoise shell glasses smiling at the camera. She is a mixed-race Chinese and white woman wearing a navy blue blouse patterned with colorful butterflies, photographed against a softly blurred beige background. Michael's photo shows a brown man with dark hair pulled back, a trimmed beard and mustache, and small hoop earrings, smiling at the camera. He is wearing a blue polo shirt and a handcrafted coconut shell bead necklace, standing in front of a softly blurred indoor background.Headshot photos of Olivia and Thomas. Olivia’s photo is a black and white portrait of a white woman with shoulder-length hair, looking into the camera with a slight smile. Thomas's photo shows a brown man wearing a tan knit beanie and a black button-up shirt with a pattern of large gold and white varied stars, looking directly at the camera. He is standing in front of a backdrop featuring Chikin Melele’s logo.

Soon, @pressonsouth.bsky.social's fellows will publish stories about eugenics in the U.S. immigration system, the use of surveillance tech by law enforcement in TN, how doulas are filling healthcare gaps for women in the South, and much more! I'll update this thread when those stories are live.

As our beloved @pressonsouth.bsky.social fellows begin to publish their work, I thought I'd share some of their excellent reporting here in a thread, starting with this story from G. Samantha Rosenthal about North Carolina being the center of anti-Zionist organizing in the South:
