Breaking from our latest women’s basketball podcast with @classicjpow.bsky.social and @howardmegdal.bsky.social: full details of the investigation into the events at the end of Liberty-Dream Game 2 #WNBA youtu.be/b_9LkHka92M?...
Back to New York after a whirlwind of a five days in Atlanta. I hadn’t been here since 2012 when I went on a social justice and civil rights tour ETGAR 36. This is such a special city and who knows maybe I’ll be back sooner than later.
According to a league source, the #WNBA believes last night’s pool report over final 4.3 seconds of overtime in Dream-Liberty should have included the word “miscommunication”.
Much more on this and what else we have learned about the end of Game 2 on this week’s @theixsports.bsky.social podcast.
Official WNBA Protest precodure below, for what it's worth. I imagine New York filed it in time last night, because why wouldn't you give it a shot? #WNBA
A league source told ESPN the league received New York’s official inquiry into the reset timeout situation yesterday and will follow the proper protocols to look into it.
NY have also screwed up timeout usage at other times this year, even earlier this game using the Q4 reset to advance the ball with no apparent play in place, then having to use a full anyway. Stewart has some credibility; they don't, really. The refs may have screwed up, but NY definitely did. #WNBA
It's hard to give the NY bench the benefit of the doubt. They didn't sub anyone out to avoid fouls despite Fiebich, JJones and Fauthoux all being on 5. They didn't even seem to realise Fauthoux had fouled out until she signaled '6' to them herself. The assistants largely look disengaged.
Fahy does wave his hand slightly, but it's hard to tell who he's looking at (NY bench, scorer's table, 3rd ref offscreen). It looks more like a 'no' wave than a 'yes', but that's complete supposition. That's probably the moment mentioned in the post-game ref report.
The response is minimal, DeMarco isn't looking at her, but one of the assistants shakes his head, seeming to indicate they don't. Fahy's right next to her at the time, but in the visible shot they don't seem to talk to each other (there's plenty of time where the shot is elsewhere).
Have been watching back bits of the NY-Atl game to try to parse the mess. Obviously it's hard to see everything due to replays and angles cutting stuff off. With 4.3s left in OT, Stewart appears to turn to her bench and make the X signal between Reese's FTs, asking if they have the reset. #WNBA
The Liberty are at the forefront of women's sports science. It's no surprise their franchise is so successful.
‼️‼️
If y’all are still incredibly confused by what happened last night at the end of the Liberty vs. Dream game last night, I did my best to explain. Reset timeout or no reset timeout. That’s the question.
