The UK’s statutory, scientific authority on nature. We work across land & sea for nature, for people & the planet.
Our ARI were co-developed with academics from @cascade-hei.bsky.social, and Defra & @naturalengland.bsky.social
🤝 We hope our ARI will help align research with real policy needs & open up new partnerships.
🌿Strengthening knowledge on the outcomes of conservation and recovery actions How can we build a stronger, more cost-effective evidence base on what conservation actions actually achieve, to improve how future policies are designed & evaluated?
💹Identifying evidence needs for funding #NatureConservation through market-based approaches
What evidence is needed to understand the real role market-based finance can play in closing the $700bn global biodiversity finance gap?
🪱Evaluating the impacts of agricultural policies and management regimes
Agriculture covers ~70% of UK land. How can we generate robust evidence on how different policies & farming practices affect #SoilHealth and biodiversity?
🎣Optimising the sustainability and resilience of marine food systems
How can the UK make the best use of wild & farmed marine resources to boost food security sustainably, and in a way that's #NaturePositive & climate-resilient?
📈Improving predictive and foresight modelling of land and sea use, and #EnvironmentalChange
How can we better model and communicate future environmental scenarios to help decision-makers understand trade-offs and consequences?
🧬Integrating novel monitoring technologies for #biodiversity and #ecosystem health
How can we use tech like #eDNA, remote sensing & acoustics to monitor species and habitats more cost-effectively, and feed this into national biodiversity indicators?
JNCC has published its new Science Impact Strategy, alongside 6 new Areas of Research Interest (ARI)
These ARIs will highlight some of our evidence needs we need to overcome in the next five years to help tackle some of the biggest questions facing #nature 🧵
Fulmar - the highest recorded species in SMP for 2024, 2025, and 2026 (so far).
Young Fulmar don't return to breeding sites until they are four or five, and even then, don't breed until they're nine! #Seabirds @btobirds.bsky.social @jncc.bsky.social @rspb.bsky.social

Every day, decisions are made that shape nature's future.
But those decisions need evidence.
Today we're launching our Science Impact Strategy 2026-2030, setting out how we'll maximise the impact of our science & turn evidence into action.
A sighting tells us an animal was there. Systematic survey data tells us how many may be using an area, inc hard-to-reach offshore waters. Every voyage adds another piece to the picture

They use "distance sampling", a proven scientific method that accounts for animals that go undetected, giving us more robust estimates of species abundance They also share their knowledge with passengers, inspiring a new audience to care about marine conservation
After a successful pilot on the UK ferry network, the programme has entered an exciting new phase: dedicated surveys aboard Saga ocean cruises, with teams of 4 surveyors on board each voyage
Trained Marine Mammal Surveyors are gathering observations from commercial vessels already sailing regular routes around the UK, turning everyday voyages into opportunities for science
Dedicated scientific surveys give us vital evidence, but covering such a vast and ever-changing marine environment is difficult and costly
That's where our partnership with @orcaweb.bsky.social comes in
🐬UK waters are home to a huge diversity of whales, dolphins and porpoises But despite decades of research, big gaps remain in our understanding of where they are and how many there are🧵
Super proud to have worked on this key paper from @pomscheme.bsky.social It navigates some complex modelling challenges but always a pleasure to collaborate with everyone involved 😊 @francescamancini.bsky.social @drnickisaac.bsky.social @ukladybirds.bsky.social @kitenet.bsky.social
Collaborative seabed mapping reveals rare coral colony in UK waters - @jncc.bsky.social
A rare pink sea fan colony (Eunicella verrucosa) has been discovered off of the south-west coast of England.
