Conservative is not right. He was more an anti-authority floating voter and HATED Margaret Thatcher. Tax exile is true, yes. And monarchist, but only in the weirdest way possible, believing the Stuarts the only true royal family and that the Windsors were essentially illegitimate.

Anthony Burgess came to speak where I went to university in the 70s. I went up to get him to sign my copy of 'Clockwork Orange'; it was a mass market paperback that had a glossary in the back that he'd not authorised so he tore it out and threw it away before signing it.

‘Why 𝘯𝘰𝘵 work simultaneously on screenplays about James Bond and Jesus Christ? He was an omnivorous polymath to the end, relentlessly curious, a true freelance mind.’

Ian Penman on Anthony Burgess, published online early from our next issue.

‘For a certain kind of northern man, Anthony Burgess has always been – for once the term is apt – something of an icon. A bit mouthy and contrarian. Not part of the self-regarding London literary establishment. A Big Canvas man.’

Ian Penman in the next issue.

Probably best to do it in Elizabethan English. Here's a little crib sheet from Anthony Burgess himself (Hamlet, but you get the idea)...
