Uncomfortable, unfiltered pieces that aren’t afraid to investigate the underbelly of existence. Narratives exploring the overlooked, the mundane, the human.

This week's Thursday Throwback is a glimpse of Swans by @zaryfekete.bsky.social

Tender and introspective, we enjoyed how Zary captured beauty in the mundane, and explored the very relevant issue of living in the moment, rather than documenting each pleasure.

Read it in Issue 4.

Thursday Throwback
Swans by Zary Fekete

'And the sun is rising. Soon the days will warm the earth. The pond will dwindle. It will be replaced with rows of yellow corn. Nobody will believe you when you try to tell them about the pond. And the swans.

But…you have the picture. The proof. Evidence that you were there. You stood in that perfect moment with those impossible creatures while they floated in the reflected sky.

Then, without fully thinking it through, the phone is back in your hand. You scroll to the picture. Your finger hovers. Then you delete it.'

This week's Tuesday Taster is a bite of Deceptively Simple by Scott MacLeod. Sharp and twisty, we enjoyed its varying levels of deception. Read it now in Issue 7.

Tuesday Taster
Deceptively Simple by Scott MacLeod

'It was not a lie of omission that Edward had failed to mention to the crowd the fact he once strangled to death a patient who shunned his unwelcome advances. That episode was well known to his audience. To the extent they could be attributed cognition.

At the conclusion of his speech, there were no questions, perhaps related to proximity to lunch hour. The attendants herded Edward and his listeners back to their cells.

The chief guard on the ward approached the new hire to the staff. He had noticed her during the speech. And noticed her noticing him. She beamed up at him.

“Do you believe what he said, that lying is embedded in our nature?” she asked.

“I do not,” he lied.'

This week's Thursday Throwback is a touching glimpse of Pale Thumb by Owen Townend. Raw and poignant, we appreciated its use of mundane details to ground the piece. Read it now in Issue 5.

 Pale Thumb by Owen Townend

'The appointment passed but the news remained, a numbness turned to a raw
pain, an outcome still within you for four more stops. Then you brushed the bell with
a pale thumb and disembarked to cracked pavement and more to come.'

'Someone left urine on the bathroom floor and I’m afraid
it will seep through my sock and track on the operating table.
My belongings are stuffed in a bag, smelling of chemical
and I’ve been waiting for this one bathroom
for an anxious number of minutes.'

This week's Sunday Snippet is a serving of The Last Supper by Katy Goforth. @katywrites.bsky.social A compelling take on the theme, we enjoyed the layers of deception and the way the story hides something unexpected inside a tale of everyday life. Read it in Issue 7.

SUNDAY SNIPPETS

See, when I’m all by myself like that, I enjoy walking in and out of all the statuary. Feels like all that weathering and decay has made real-life figures immobile and silent—living but trapped. They call it the “uncanny valley,” where statues appear almost human-like. Hosey would tell me I read too much and that’s why I think on things that don’t matter. Hosey would tell me a lot of things that I didn’t like.

All responses for Issue 8: FEAR have now been sent! If you haven’t found yours, please check your spam folder, and feel free to contact us at underbellypress@gmail.com with any questions! There were a couple of instances of emails bouncing back, so please do get in touch if you haven’t received anything.

Thank you for the incredible response! With over 700 submissions, this was the largest amount I’ve ever had. Rejections are easily the hardest part of what I do, and even more so when I receive so many submissions but can only take a limited amount. I appreciate everyone who took the time to submit.

A sincere thank you for your continued support. More news about Issue 8 soon as we head into the editing stage! Please note I will be away from 14-21 October.

What inspired you to write 50 Reasons to Live? “I had been pretty depressed and anxious, needing time off work and I had just finished therapy. A few weeks after my last session I wrote the first draft in three weeks. It literally poured out of me, and really felt like I was shedding skin.”

Some of your favourite books/authors? “I have always felt more connected to American prose. I like the immediacy of it. For me, the words hit the page with more force. The beats were a big thing for me, especially Kerouac. His spontaneous prose approach to writing really shaped the way I write.”

What advice would you give to emerging writers looking to get published? “Experience something. It doesn’t even have to be dramatic. Just put yourself in different shoes and see what happens. That’s where the good stuff comes from.”

What do you hope your readers take away from 50 Reasons to Live? “That we are all just humans, trying our best to navigate and survive this fucked up world. It’s okay to be ill, to be overwhelmed, to be angry, sad & exhausted. But it is also okay to be happy, even in the face of so much heartache.”

What’s one thing about writing everyone should know? “You can leave your mark on the world in a way that other people can’t. You can say something that deserves the space on the page, and give others the gift of knowing, feeling and understanding something new about the world.”
