Book 146 of the year is Japanese Tales of Mystery & Imagination!

I REALLY enjoyed this fascinating and messed up collection.

My full review - featuring a reaction to each of the individual stories - is on goodreads.

Book 145 (and yep, I have to adjust my book count because at some point I started miscounting):

The Only One Left! It's an amazing read and completely lives up to the hype.

#BookSky

Once you start reading it, you won't be able to put it down! I needed to know what happened, and even though I could intuit certain things, I could not have anticipated every twist.

The ending is so satisfying, I won't say more than that. Experience it for yourself.

It's 4.75 stars instead of a full 5 only because certain plot points were a bit convenient, like (spoilers hidden, visible on goodreads, on my account Brooksie Fontaine)

I hope you love it! 🩷

#Sirens in the autumn mist, ocean steaming gray against the October morning.
Their eyes are like embers or seaglass, and they watch you like remnants of night.
They won't come to shore, so there's this camaraderie between you and forces that would eat you if they could.

The apples are red hearts in the trees, full of #sin or knowledge, depending on how they're eaten.
And the pomegranates, bejeweled inside, each seed a teardrop, a kiss, a secret, a coin key to the glittering geode kingdom beneath the earth.

In summer, the #islands are a Van Gogh landscape under the autumn moon.
September blushes the folliage, October nights light them with orange lanterns.
In the morning, the blazing trees peer over the ghosting blue mist, as if the warm and cool of life are lovers.

Adorable series I grew up on about a vampire bunny named Bunnicula! I reread it this Halloween season and it was just as great

Book 144: Our Wives Under the Sea 😭

(And yes, I'm quietly adjusting my book count, somewhere along the line I miscounted LOL)

#BookSky

Just read it. This was a spiritual experience, scary and beautiful as the sea.

Can you tell I read Bunnicula growing up 🐰🩸

October 2026:

So worth a reread, and I'm sure many more. Such a beautiful book, full of the warmth and passion of life, friendship, love, and dare I say found family in the face of life's unpredictability and cruelty.

An IMMACULATE read for the Halloween season, full of creeping dread and atmosphere, but also humor and joy.

An unexpected moral, I think, is that we may not be able to control the trials we face in life, but we can control how we rise to meet them.

My week in October reading!

Part 3/3!

#BookSky

Book 7: Lud-in-the-Mist

As awesome as you could expect a 1920s novel about bootlegging faerie fruit to be, and an unexpectedly tender story about a father and son.

And humanities need for and fear of creativity and dreams.

Image of the book

Kitty: The background should be orange, it's set partially in fall and kind of spooky.

Bunny: You got Mrs. Dalloway, let me have this one.Book 8: Stars Above

An image of the book

A deeply satisfying look into the happily-ever-after of the Lunar Chronicles characters - or what happened to them before they even started their ā€œonce upon a time.

So many of these stories made me emotional!

Kitty: This one's scary.

Bunny: No it's not.

Kitty: Fairy tales are scary!Book 9: How to Sell A Haunted House

Mostly a scary-good time, but I do have some complaints.

The main sibling duo are very realized and tangible, but there was an abrupt tonal shift at one point that detracted momentum from the plot.

But it’s campy fun scares with a strong emotional core and good conclusion, and I ultimately really liked it.

Kitty: The title is SUCH a scam, selling the house is like 5% of the story.

Bunny: A spoiler warning would be nice.Book 10: Dracula

I’m cheating a little here, because I’m not QUITE done with this reread! BUT, I’m on track to finish it today.

An unexpectedly tender book, full of love and characters you WILL love. And vampires who crawl in lizard fashion.

Kitty: Perhaps THE Halloween classic!

Bunny: I'll agree there.

Book 3: A Night in the Lonesome October

Probably a must-read for every Halloween fanatic.

With the vibe of Bunnicula for grownups, it's a mass literary and classic film crossover event in a cozy-spooky Victorian setting.

I can't believe I didn't discover it sooner!

The black cat says, "Animals are the best protagonists."Book 4: Frankenstein

My third read of this classic.

There’s something new to love each time!

It’s both an exploration of the act of creation - in terms of art, science, and parenthood - and the exploration of grief and destruction.

Linguistically beautiful, atmospheric, and deeply, deeply sad.

The black cat says, "I hate deadbeat dads!"Book 5: The Second Book of Chronicles

A non-spooky one! Well, alright, some scary stuff happens in the Bible. A lot, actually.

I have a personal endeavor to read one Book from the Bible a month, and it makes me feel stupid because it’s SO linguistically and historically rich.

This one is no exception.

Image of the book.

A white bunny says, "Let me handle the non-spooky ones." The black cat replies, "You're plenty spooky!"Book 6: Mrs. Dalloway

A brilliant, curious book absolutely brimming with love and empathy and humor towards the inner worlds every single person contains.

I want to revisit it in summer, because it captures that June evening melancholy perfectly!

Image of the yellow book cover

White Bunny: Change that orange background, this is not a scary book.

Black cat: Nope! It goes too well with the book cover!

Bunny: It's not even set in autumn.

October Books Week 1

Brooksie C. FontaineBook 2: Hamlet.

"What a piece of work is a man, how noble in reason! how infinite in faculty! in form and moving how express and admirable! in action how like an angel! in apprehension how like a god! the beauty of the world! the paragon of animals! And yet, to me, what is this quintessence of dust?"

A play about death, the banquet of life, and a tortured yet brilliant mind attacking itself.

Along with Macbeth, the best Shakespeare play for October. It's an atmospheric and brooding classic, and there's a ghost.

Boats come in from the October Country, pumpkins as big as ships, shellacked to be preserved as sea-fairing vessels.
Marshmallow-white #sails crisp the autumn sky, and ghosts whisp around them, their cries joyful, their season here.
