I hate this story I hate how it repeats. I believe we can have a new story, but to do that we must erase a number of fictions. That boys will be boys. That a girl must be always on guard. That a man can’t help himself. Or that a man stands by and watches. That it’s not his problem.

I wrote Rabbit and Juliet after reading about the r*pe case in Steubenville. There was a photograph of two boys carrying the unconscious girl, laughing. I never saw this photo, but all their friends did. A photograph like that is in my book. It’s one of many.

We hear these stories, but there are more that go unspoken. The women in your life know them anyway. We are trained to be constantly vigilant, and blamed for the unspeakable when it happens. She drank. She did drugs. She kissed him so what did she think would happen?

The meager punishments are (sometimes) grudgingly doled out for the promising young men. The survivors — whose promise was less important— carry on as best they can. Later, they will hear of a similar case. The same story, again.

The story is told again and again. It is the story that all the women in your life know already. They have heard it many times. Steubenville. Cornell. Columbia.

There’s an anime show called Ranking of Kings and I swear I haven’t felt this much wonder and emotion from a show in ages.
