I kind of have to clarify, someone misunderstood this post. I was talking about how I do not support use of AI for image processing to make scientific images look prettier (in regard to the Nikon competition) because visualizing science is such joy and science is beautiful as it is.

There's something beautiful about sitting at the confocal and visualizing different cell types, different tissues, different ideas .... It's such pure joy. Science is beautiful as it is. I hope we are able to protect this experience - esp in light of recent events of AI usage for image processing.

Most animal species pack sperm DNA with protamines instead of histones. Protamines are essential for male fertility. They are among the fastest-evolving genes in animals. That makes little sense. We think we know why, in a new paper led by @ching-hochang.bsky.social. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

1/ Our paper, โ€œEnhancer binding kinetics explain transcription factor hub formation,โ€ is now published! Here we set out to understand why transcription factors form bright clusters or โ€œhubsโ€ in the nucleus, and whether those hubs actually control gene activity.

Teaching undergraduate quantum mechanics affects your brain in subtle ways. I just realized that my dreams last night included an extended discussion of where the factors of hbar go in various equations.

Doing some very important talk prep before I go visit @joshdubnau.bsky.social at Stony Brook next week. With sincere apologies to the creators of this once-adorable childrens' book, I present the Barber Lab Limited Edition: ๐Ÿงช๐Ÿชฐ

Cover of a childrens book originally titled "I wouldn't Hurt a Fly" by MS Bennet with a yellow seal from "The Bully Project." Cover illustration shows a cute water color fly above some other insects. The title has been modified to say "We WOULD hurt a fly" and the bully project seal now reads "The Barber Lab."

How do long-lived multipotent stem cells cope with mechanical stress in vivo?

We found that neural crest cells are protected from mechanical stress during migration in confined tissue environment.
