I track sanctioned ships on AIS — name changes, MMSI switches, where the lists disagree. Building hullcipher.com.

Saw this one here too, posted this morning: bsky.app/profile/josh.hullcipher.com/post/3mxvzqc5tml2m. One more thing since then: two minutes after the switch, the Cameroon number stopped sending her name, IMO and destination. It's only call sign TJM71R now, so searching for MYRA won't find her.

Check out the positions near Demyansk on Oct 14. I don't think a ship can do that!

@josh.hullcipher.comOct 15, 2026, 12:09 PM

Same name, same 228 m hull, 2.6 km further on. Of 150 changes like this we've heard on listed ships since late June, she's one of two made inside an hour with the ship under way. OFAC's entry has a Panama number for her. VesselFinder still shows Madagascar. hullcipher.com/vessel/9336490

A tanker usually goes quiet for a day or more between one country's number and the next. MYRA (IMO 9336490), on five sanctions lists, took seven minutes. At 5:26 AM EDT on 15 Oct she was heading west off Prangli, Estonia, on a Madagascar number. At 5:33 we heard her on a Cameroon one.

Map of the eastern Gulf of Finland. MYRA's track on her Madagascar number (orange) runs west from near Primorsk; her Cameroon number (green) carries on
  past Helsinki. Thin lines run from the track to a point near Demyansk, 380 km inland, where a tooltip reads 81.9 kn and 'This position is on land.'

Their transponders sit close to hers too. She's 273125320, BIRYUZA 273125330, REDUT 273125830, and UNZHA, another listed tanker, is 273125820. Maybe registered together. Not sure though.

@josh.hullcipher.comOct 15, 2026, 12:02 PM

She's on no list, but she had company. Two listed Russian tankers went south of Bornholm in the 12 hours before her: REDUT (EU) eastbound through the spot she's in now, and BIRYUZA (UK/EU/CA/CH) westbound.

@josh.hullcipher.comOct 14, 2026, 1:10 PM

Not the only one. The UK dropped ZANGAZUR (IMO 9420617) in July and Canada still lists her too.

@josh.hullcipher.comOct 14, 2026, 1:10 PM

The US and UK took the tanker ASTRA (IMO 9273387) off their sanctions lists this year. Canada didn't. She's broadcasting as LUMIS now, so searching Canada's list for that name turns up nothing. Left port 8 Oct, AIS says Kunak, Malaysia. hullcipher.com/vessel/9273387

A fifth ship on those berths. DASHAN (IMO 9299666) sat at Tuzla on a Gambian number until 25 Aug. On 9 Oct we heard her 1 km away as ORAKUL, on a Russian number. Her six lists say DASHAN or MIANZIMU. VesselFinder shows ORAKUL as well. hullcipher.com/findings/2026-09-23-qendil-giatsint-tuzla

SONANGOL NAMIBE is not on any of the lists we follow, so nothing interesting to add here.

@josh.hullcipher.comOct 13, 2026, 12:14 PM

Update: she left the same afternoon. At 12:44 PM EDT her AIS destination became Tallinn. She got moving about 2:35, and by 3:01 it read Baltic Sea for order. At 5 AM today she was heading east at 9 kn. hullcipher.com/vessel/9321172

@josh.hullcipher.comOct 12, 2026, 8:40 PM

Definetly the odd one out. 13 other tankers left Russia's Gulf of Finland ports this week and all of them went north of Bornholm. Three are on sanctions lists. LOURDAS BAY is on none and she's the only one that turned south.

Thanks for this. It answers what I asked in a thread here last month. We first heard her on the Equatorial Guinea number on 29 Jul, on that same anchorage off Trelleborg, while the ban was in force. Her Cameroon number had gone quiet 35 minutes before. hullcipher.com/vessel/9321172

@josh.hullcipher.comOct 10, 2026, 9:33 PM

Matches what we hear. BELLARIS 9332614 is on a Cameroon number now, but OFAC still lists its old Panama one.

Same with STARWAY 9273246: OFAC listed Panama 352004620 on Oct 8. Last heard Sep 2 off Dubai. On Barbados 314314000 now.

In between, Maritime Executive had her on the quay at Tobruk on 21 Sep, from imagery: maritime-executive.com/article/russian-military-cargo-ship-heads-for-turkey-from-tobruk

@josh.hullcipher.comOct 9, 2026, 7:44 PM

The 44 days had a stop in them. We lost her off Motril on 6 Sep heading east, and heard her again on 29 Sep heading west, about 9 nm from the same spot. hullcipher.com/vessel/9349291

Maritime Executive counted 13 of the 35 as registered in Oman: maritime-executive.com/article/japan-launches-first-vessel-sanctions-in-support-of-ukraine We hear 13 on Omani numbers no list publishes. Did any Japanese insurer or shipyard still serve one of the 35, or does the ban change nothing?

@josh.hullcipher.comOct 8, 2026, 12:02 PM

Japan's list gives each ship an IMO number and no name. Take IMO 9271585. Four lists call her KRISHNA 1 and the UK calls her PRUDENCE. On air she's KOMANDER, on a Russian number, and VesselFinder files her that way too. We last heard her off Karpathos on 4 Oct. hullcipher.com/vessel/9271585

@josh.hullcipher.comOct 8, 2026, 12:01 PM

Japan's first sanctions on ships, 35 of them, took effect on 2 Oct. Not one of them was new. All 35 were already on the US, EU, Canadian and Swiss lists, every one since December 2024 or earlier.

@josh.hullcipher.comOct 8, 2026, 11:40 AM

Thanks for linking the two. The Cameroon number that sent her IMO from the Taiwan Strait hasn't come back. We last heard it at 12:19 AM EDT on 4 Oct. Also sent you a DM, no rush.
