@govpressoffice.gov.ca.gov signed Senate Bill 1090 as the legislative session closed, limiting controversial high-density development in two Altadena zip codes. In a letter accompanying his signing, Gov. Newsom said he recognized the community’s “desire for stability” as it charts its recovery.

The largest number of those new developments trace back to Ocean Development Inc, a Simi Valley, #California-based company. Other projects have been connected to over 100 different companies, some with ties to private equity, and located out of state.

We spent months interviewing locals, pouring over sale records, permit applications, and changing regulations, for @insideclimatenews.org on the way developers and financial constraints are impacting the Altadena rebuild.

Another great collaboration with the unflappable @stevenrodas.bsky.social!

What does Swain worry about for people across California? “The number one concern I have this winter is for people who live on the coast of California, because this record breaking El Niño will double the amount of sea level rise we’ve seen from climate change overnight.”

Based on a recent study in Science, the current El Niño is likely the strongest in over a millennium. Officials from Britain to Los Angeles are issuing advisories for residents to prepare and stock up on essentials in preparation.

As a record breaking El Niño continues to grow in the Pacific, @weatherwest.bsky.social explains what may be in store for the next year as we brace for an El Niño “so far above anything we've previously seen, it doesn't even fit on the same axis.” (@ninardietz.bsky.social for @insideclimatenews.org)

breaking for @insideclimatenews.org, 700+ dairies in California are within 1 mile of an area at high risk for nitrate groundwater contamination.

The valley with the most dairy farms in the state has adopted an order that gets stricter on regulating harmful manure waste.

The dairy industry and business owners worried about added costs and new requirements from the regulations. Environmental groups were uneasy about whether tribal communities got an appropriate chance to weigh in and if ample outreach happened for Spanish-first speakers.

About 94% of the dairy farms within 1 mile of areas classified as “high risk” for nitrate groundwater contamination are in the Central Valley, according to California. State says there are ~ 1,000 large-scale farms here. Enviro groups say that’s an undercount. Map: @paulhornographic.bsky.social

Environmental testing, commissioned by NJ.com, revealed that the neighborhood around the landfill, which was first shut down in 1979, “is a ‘hot spot’ of toxins.”

When he decided to map the cases, Morris found at least 28 people on his parents’ street had developed cancer. Across the neighborhood, there were forty-one cases. “It just kept freaking snowballing,” he said. The reported case count today has surpassed 480.

In February, Rusty Morris began to suspect there might be a cancer cluster in Keyport, New Jersey, where he grew up. His father was being treated for prostate cancer, and every time Morris talked to his mom, she seemed to mention another neighbor who had been diagnosed.

"The key story here is batteries," said Ed Smeloff, explaining how California drastically cut its gas use. These charts tell the story, comparing the 2026 peak demand day on the California grid to the all-time peak in 2022.

A chart showing renewables and battery deployment in California on the peak day of 2026 and the all-time peak day in 2022. It shows renewables and batteries are a much larger part of the mix in 2026 than they were in 2022.Gas and imports were way down in 2026 on California's grid compared to 2022, as this chart shows.
