I was invited to write a short article for the @leverhulme.ac.uk newsletter out this month, and excitingly it was chosen to feature on the cover! Read about our work on exoplanet atmospheres and why clouds are kind of great, actually #WorldSpaceWeek πŸͺπŸ”

If @science.org is covering it, I guess I should share something here- we have for the first time definitively detected radio emission from a planet around another star! πŸ”πŸ§ͺ🎒

What does this mean? Details in thread! (But TL;DR- still not aliens) 🧡

With the press release out, I'm delighted to share our work reporting the discovery of a 3rd planet in the beta Pictoris system! Say hello to beta Pic d - a gas giant with 2.4 times the mass of Jupiter that takes 91 years to orbit its host star, far longer than the 2 known planets in the system πŸͺπŸ”

Ten years of hide-and-seek! 🫣 Astronomers used our VLT to find a new #exoplanet orbiting the famous star Beta Pictoris β€” hiding in archival ESO observations spanning over a decade! And it's shyer than any exoplanet we've imaged before. πŸ” πŸ§ͺ 1/3 πŸ“· ESO/B. Sutlieff, M. Bonse et al.

Image of a star system. The central star is hidden behind a coronagraph, marked by a white star symbol at the centre. A bright companion appears to the left, while a much fainter companion, indicated by a white arrow, is visible to the right against a reddish-orange background.
