So when we talk about tax and living standards, we need to look at what people gain collectively, as well as what they pay individually.

Read our latest blog to find out why cutting the revenue available for public services can disproportionately affect women.

This matters for gender equality. Women tend to have lower incomes, take on more unpaid care and rely more heavily on public services. Cuts to the money available for those services can therefore hit women particularly hard.

Would cutting taxes improve your living standards? The debate around tax often focuses on how much money people have left in their pockets. But that’s only part of the picture. Our living standards also depend on the public services we all rely on – from healthcare to education and social care.

Our Deputy Director, Erin Mansell, spoke to LBC about Kemi Badenoch’s plans to remove the £100,000 cliff edge for childcare support – and the wider changes needed to make childcare genuinely affordable and accessible.

Care needs are rising and will continue to do so as our population is aging. It’s time for social care to become a settled part of how the UK budgets, because investing in care is not optional. Listen to our director Dr Daniella Jenkins share her thoughts on Al Jazeera

We’ve also created a calculator where you can see what you would contribute under Carepool, based on your income, and how this compares with the current system.

Try the calculator and let us know what you think. 👇

Our new work sets out a 10-year vision for a National Care Service, backed by a social insurance model. At its heart is CarePool – a dedicated national fund designed to protect social care funding from short-term political cycles.

@womensbudgetgrp.bsky.socialSep 28, 2026, 3:18 PM

We welcome the Prime Minister’s commitment to transform adult social care and introduce a universal service, free at the point of use. For too long, social care has been held back by an unstable funding system, leaving people facing uncertainty and potentially catastrophic care costs.

@womensbudgetgrp.bsky.socialSep 24, 2026, 9:33 AM

But what could that mean for you?

Try our new calculator to see what you might contribute under a social care levy - and compare it with the costs you could face under the current system.

Try it and tell us what you think!

We're proposing a National Care Service where everyone could access the care they need without worrying about whether they can afford it. One way to help fund this could be through a social care levy, with everyone contributing towards a system that is there for all of us when we need it.

@womensbudgetgrp.bsky.socialSep 24, 2026, 9:33 AM

Social care affects us all. Under the current system, one in seven people will face social care costs of more than £100,000. We think there's a better way.

Our first concept asks what a fully funded National Care Service could look like in 2036, how it could work and what it could mean for you. It's a big policy idea designed to challenge assumptions and start a conversation about what could be possible.

@womensbudgetgrp.bsky.socialSep 23, 2026, 10:51 AM

What if we started asking different policy questions? Instead of starting with what our current system allows, WBG Concepts starts with what people need - and explores the policies and funding that could make it possible.

We look forward to working with the Government and with partners to continue progress towards real freedom and unconstrained economic choices for all women and girls.

@womensbudgetgrp.bsky.socialSep 21, 2026, 11:55 AM

Attitudes that belittle, undermine and harm women go hand in hand with attitudes, policies and structures that reduce and minimise women's economic equality and financial freedoms.

@womensbudgetgrp.bsky.socialSep 21, 2026, 11:55 AM

We welcome the Government’s new national taskforce to tackle misogyny and its recognition that harmful attitudes towards women and girls must be challenged across society.

Women also consistently placed greater importance on every form of workplace support than men - with flexible working identified as the most important one. www.theguardian.com/society/2026...
