An evening of film, Haiku, art, and ocean in Wellington! 🌊 πŸ¦‘πŸ§ͺ

We held a screening of our short film Changing Waters at Soundings Theatre in Te Papa during the #HighCO2VI πŸ‡³πŸ‡Ώ

Attendees got to write ocean-inspired haiku and decorate tote bags featuring beautiful designs of our taonga species

🌊 πŸ¦‘πŸ§ͺ We organised in collaboration with ICONEC the event "Marine Policy 101 for Early Career Scientists" as part of #HighCO2VI πŸ‡³πŸ‡Ώ

It was inspiring to see the next generation of practitioners designing their science for practical decision-making purposes on #OceanAcidification!

Heat and acidity πŸ”€ two symptoms of too much COβ‚‚. 🌊 πŸ¦‘πŸ§ͺ

One stresses marine life through temperature, the other through chemistry. And together they reduce resilience.

Wonderful way to kick-off the #HighCO2VI in Wellington πŸ‡³πŸ‡Ώ
Today's session brought together partners from the Asia Pacific region to participate in a day-long workshop.

The #Pacific Island Region and SE #Asia have a long history of leadership on #OA science.
Here's to building a regional roadmap!

The Pacific isn't waiting on ocean acidification - it's building the response.

Here are 5 ways governments are putting OA into policy, from monitoring to NDCs πŸ‘‡

The Alaska #OceanAcidification Network is your place to learn about marine carbon dioxide removal #mCDR. πŸ§ͺπŸŒŠπŸ¦‘

aoan.aoos.org

Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal
(mCDR) - An intro for Alaskans
Examples of proposed mCDR techniques
ALKALINITY ENHANCEMENT
Adding crushed minerals to or removing acid from seawater to help it absorb
more COβ‚‚.
OCEAN FERTILIZATION
Adding nutrients, like iron, to encourage phytoplankton blooms that pull COβ‚‚
from the atmosphere.
SEAWEED FARMING FOR CARBON STORAGE
Growing kelp or seaweed at large scales, then sinking it into deep ocean
areas, or creating durable goods to store the carbon it absorbed.
If successful, mCDR could provide benefits for Alaska’s marine ecosystems and coastal livelihoods. If done
irresponsibly, it could also result in environmental and economic risks and pose complex tradeoffs. There
is a need for coastal Alaskans to have a voice in shaping the emerging field.

In the Pacific, the ocean is food, protection, and culture - and #OceanAcidification threatens all three. 🌊

This October, the region hosts the world, from Pre-COP31 in Fiji to #HighCO2VI in Wellington. Here's why it matters πŸ§΅πŸ‘‡
