Citizens’ assemblies push for stronger climate action, but political impact remains limited. A new study of 488 recommendations shows that turning citizens’ proposals into policy depends on political leadership and public pressure.
📢 New publication (open access) on coupling mini-publics and direct democracy.
I develop a processual typology identifying six empirical variants, including underexplored contestatory and channelling couplings, and distinguishing designed from reactive forms.

📢New paper in @thejop.bsky.social on the reciprocal nature of citizens’ support for democratic transgressions.
Together with Hannah Werner & @annakern.bsky.social , we show that when confronted with violations by political opponents, citizens’ support for transgressions by their own side doubles!
One more week to apply and join our research project at @sotonpolitics.bsky.social

There are other studies that demonstrate a broad link between quality of govt and satisfaction with democracy, which might suggest it goes both ways - e.g these examples (from a chapter of my book on democracies as political-administrative systems: bristoluniversitypressdigital.com/monochap-oa/...)
'Translation' is quite a kind way of it referring to Ed Miliband as Ed Davey 😂
Super excited to see this article in print in the APSR:

The deadline to apply for the PoPPiE Research Fellow position is on Friday.
With wonderful timing, the PoPPiE website is down. If you are looking for more info on the project, then I have added the six-page project description to my own website: rikkidean.com/poppie_annou...
I've seen visiting families have breakdowns when they see the prices at the Gatwick express machine. Always think that it is such a shame that the first intro to England is to get ripped off for the train. Price to East Croydon swiping with credit card is only a few pounds though. It's mad.
Congrats Ian! Very timely for the present moment.
Ever wondered what attributes are relevant in your conjoint experiment? And what assumptions you need to estimate it? Asya and I got you covered. In a new working paper we propose the APNS: the probability that an attribute's level change is necessary and sufficient for the selection of a profile.
New work by our colleague @lalamur.bsky.social (w/ @janesuit.bsky.social & Eileen Culloty, @dublincityuni.bsky.social) tests whether Climate Change Assemblies correct US misperceptions about climate change's causes. Expert advice had greater effects, but prior trust matters. doi.org/10.1080/1752...

Had a request from a journal today to be handling editor for a single article. What fresh new hell is this? Are the journals not even going to employ editors anymore?
The 🇪🇺 has been trialing participatory democracy - but do those who support supranational institutions want that? In this article, I show that they do not, instead preferring representation and technocracy. But: moral and cultural cosmopolitans 💜participation. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
This is a pretty good example of what my ERC project, PoPPiE, is about. Much political theory implicitly teaches us that we, as individuals, should have a single abstract procedural ideology that applies across contexts. But why should we? The world is complex and our response to it should be too.
Recently started getting the strangest emails through the contact forms of my project websites that I presume are from 'lonely' LLMs. Here's today's from Liam Miller Liam Nelson, complaining that his clothes no longer match his greying hair. That's it. No link or attempt to sell me anything.
People don’t realize how serious the situation is.
