I ran with an assumption and told the con you’d say that! Massive congrats though, the UK scene loves you!

Bet Ian wouldn’t have let typos slip through either…

Massive congrats to Kell Woods for winning the Robert Holdstock Award for Best Fantasy Novel for UPON A STARLIT TIDE! A glorious book, and it’s a mad privilege to collect this on her behalf.

The greatest of adulations from the rafters for Ian Whates and NewCon pPress for winning the best independent press. True titans of the uk scene, Ian has been the beating heart of UK genre for decades. A gentleman, an inspiration and just a massive fucking delight of a human being. Love you, Ian.

Buy direct from publishers or trusted indie stores Writers: this could be you or your publisher next Readers: if you want to be able to read queer horror (or any titles deemed "objectionable" by increasingly draconian tech monopolists)... do not support this shit Buy direct

(I should have done this from the office yesterday, obvs, because spotty train wifi and tagging the correct people don't play nicely...)

This is one of the most terrifying interviews I’ve ever seen. The slow reveal of the mental landscape at work here. If you don’t end up thinking we should stop these people with as much force as we can muster, I’d be very surprised.

The thresholds for any tax are _really_ high, you need to have a lot for it to kick in. It’s not about people passing on their house and some cash to their kids. It’s tied up with CGT and how assets are taxed. The people insulated by passive income, so wealth accelerates, things like that.

@georgesandison.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 4:21 PM

Or how you can reduce how much you pay by moving assets around within a couple, or the really very generous rules on gifts before you die. Honestly, if I have enough left to pay any under the current system, I'll be extremely happy.

@georgesandison.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 4:10 PM

It feels to people like you’re taking away their legacy, I get it. But the reality is a widening gulf, and the legacy is more and more people pushed off the bottom to protect the few at the top.

@georgesandison.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 4:09 PM

Always wild to see what people think of inheritance tax. All these things are true simultaneously: only 4-5% of estates pay IHT; inequality is bad & getting worse quickly; that 4-5% leave more than enough to keep the kids for life; increasing IHT is urgently necessary.

The problem is, train stations are known to run on an obscure subset of bistromathics.

@georgesandison.bsky.socialOct 5, 2026, 12:34 PM

No idea, but I tend to assume London adds 40% to all prices. The 4-pack price is less that £1/bar as well. Which makes the single bar prices categorically insane, I realise. But I digress, bargain for the book!
