Great start to the UK's 'Cycle to School Week' in Manchester and Trafford. Follow along with the success of the new Bike Bus, thanks to @walkridegm.org.uk funded by @ategov.bsky.social

How much *can* you carry by #CargoBike?

It costs 140 times more to run a van than to run a cargo bike, which will only get worse as the price of diesel climbs.

While a van will sometimes be necessary, a cargo bike can often do the job just as well.

I don't think we have these mapped out, no โ€“ย possibly because the signs on their own are basically meaningless!

Happy #WorldCarFreeDay AND #MakingActivePlaces! If you're at the conference in Manchester today, find someone in a red Walk Ride GM t-shirt and say hello ๐Ÿ˜Š

Today is World Car Free Day!

Try walking or wheeling a journey, exploring your neighbourhood on foot and sharing your favourite people-friendly street.

Every step helps build healthier, happier communities.

Reliably unsafe? One out of two...?

@walkridegm.org.ukSep 22, 2026, 8:09 AM

This sounds a LOT like Greater Manchester. There are huge areas that wouldn't even fall into 1, because they're not safe to cycle, whereas some routes are a 2, sometimes with very short sections of 3 along the way.

Also, the four categories of bicycle policy: 1. Bikes are obstacles (outright bans) 2. Bikes are toys (OK, your kids can ride around their subdivision) 3. Bikes are exercise (paths in parks that you drive to) 4. Bikes are transportation (you can mostly get from A to B without risking death)

We need more ambition than that, Mr Burnham... ๐Ÿ‘€

Sadly, that's probably the only course of action. Police won't do anything unless it's an obstruction - which it clearly is, but in the way they would define it.

This is brilliant as a simple way of thinking about where a place is at with cycling. Which category does your city/area sit in?

CALL TO ACTION: Tameside Council has announced a new consultation for improvements to the A560 that include wider footpaths, resurfaced roads and footpaths, improved pedestrian crossings, safer junctions, better bus stops, and new separated cycle lanes.

A CGI showing an impression of the proposals for a road. There are silhouettes of people walking, wheeling, sitting and cycling around. The road has trees, wildflower strips, houses, and cycle lanes running alongside, and a zebra crossing across the road in the near distance. There is a summery sky above. Text states: Raise your voice for better quality of life along the A560 (Hattersley) - and ensure the scheme isn't scrapped. Consultation runs from 17 August to 18 September.

This is another big opportunity to improve our region, so don't sit on this while objectors steal the narrative.

Seize the opportunity while itโ€™s here and add your voice to positive change for our health, wellbeing and quality of life.

Images showing a 20mph sign and the Walk Ride GM logo, and text stating: In May, we asked council candidates to pledge to wider rollout of 20mph to reduce road danger and give us all a better quality of life. And nowโ€ฆ itโ€™s happening! But we need your support in the latest consultation by 18 September via the shared link. Seize the opportunity to have your say to help realise a vision of safer, happier, friendlier neighbourhoods and make sure proposed improvements go ahead in Wythenshawe, Manchester. If we donโ€™t speak up now, then passionately negative opposition voices could dominate the discourse and ensure we continue to hurtle towards intimidation by speeding SUVs every time we walk, wheel or cycle in our neighbourhoods.
