(the us-east instance subscribes to the bluesky relay) 🍏 no other microcosm services impacted we’ll upgrade the affected server tomorrow

@microcosm.blueOct 15, 2026, 10:11 PM

🌕 Service note: microcosm jetstream (Montreal) lagging

jetstream.fire.hose.cam can't keep up with the number of clients connected. just rolled out a change that stops it from *dropping* events, but now it is falling behind.

alts:

⌥ jetstream2.fr.hose.cam (EU)
⌥ jetstream1.us-east.fire.hose.cam

I built a Bluesky post backlink index for @shelf.cafe and wrote up all the juicy technical details. Features kite+jetstream,
@microcosm.blue's constellation, and amazingly, bloom filters!

One of the most fun blog posts I've written.

jola.devMaking your own atproto backlink indexI built an atproto backlink index using Latch for primitives and Kite for the jetstream, and I sped it up with some neat bloom filter and erlang atomics action.

I've released a new version of Latch, the elixir OAuth client library, with some nice improvements including Slingshot integration for identity resolution. I've already rolled it out for myself and it makes logging in _incredibly_ fast

Proposal from @bad-example.com to add STAR to DASL.

Any concerns or issues? It looks pretty damn well motivated to me :)

just never put in the nginx one-liner to enable it. (and for clarity: never been plain text. public traffic has always been tls, upstream from the gateway inside wireguard)

@microcosm.blueOct 1, 2026, 7:03 PM

hopefully! browser-based apps should probably benefit the most. (there are also some tail latency improvements i need to finally ship for constellation itself. few more steps between here and there though!)

@microcosm.blueOct 1, 2026, 6:46 PM

bonus: finally(!!) enabled http2 for constellation: apps sending batches of requests should hopefully see better performance/behaviour.

@microcosm.blueOct 1, 2026, 6:44 PM

done and gone. i did copy the redirect over to the new gateway config in the end, so those few requests per day will keep working ✌️

microcosm gateway migration done, with new automation for future provisioning and maintenance. all droplets deleted. 13-year-old digitalocean account deleted, no more money for this shit.

the primary microcosm api gateway is still running on a digitalocean droplet. hopefully will be able to move it next week so i can close my account there. wish i didn’t always have such a backlog.

STAR could be the serialization format for atproto spaces! maybe! the v1 format isn’t finalized yet, so now is a great time to share feedback and help shape it!

Bfig (aka:[phil])@bad-example.comSep 29, 2026, 6:04 PM

restructured the repo a bit, took i think pretty much all suggestions, and split out the application profile and changelog bits. it's now a short spec! (yay!)

tangled.org/star/v1-star at main · microcosm.blue/starSTreaming ARchive format: simpler, stricter, smaller than CARs for a subset of use-cases.

PART TWO: All the other reasons i don't like CARs for atproto repo exports! In this one: ambiguities and inefficiencies. (the biggest problem is already hopefully getting fixed in the IETF draft though, yay!)

seeing recovery already! and acknowledgement from bluesky. no impact on microcosm services.

@microcosm.blueSep 15, 2026, 10:31 PM

seeing some firehose weridness! significant drop in events received by both microcosm relays in the last 15mins. since these relays are hosted by different providers on different continents, this seems likely to be a real drop in network volume.

received event rate, commits received line charts. both show relay2 and relay3, almost exactly overlapping series. it's very stable over 400 evt/sec until the last 15mins of the hour-long window, where it drops and levels to just over 200 evt/sec (both charts are essentially the same)

Works with @microcosm.blue Constellation for part of it.

Moves are written one record per user per game. Portable Game Notation PGN is used.

all good, got lucky and didn’t lose power here

@microcosm.blueSep 2, 2026, 9:14 PM

availability warning. everything fine so far and most microcosm services have automatic failover to cloud providers, so any impact should be minimal if anything happens 🤞
