Ok so in today’s game of ableism bingo I just got “be grateful there are volunteers who can help” and basically saying volunteers should be able to say whatever they want so more of them join. I’m so tired.

They seem really mad that I suggested blind people might want privacy. Like I don’t want people saying “I HELPED A BLIND PERSON FIGURE OUT WHAT A SIGN SAID AND IT MADE MY DAY” We’re not warm fuzzy factories

Blind people deserve help without heroics or inspiration. Full stop.

They said “but I didn’t use their name.” I am choosing peace and not going back to that thread. But my point to them would be this: Just because they weren’t named doesn’t mean they’re not on social media and won’t find your post about how wholesome it was to help them. How it made their day.

I expressed - as a blind person - the wish that people who volunteer on the be my eyes app not talk about how “wholesome” their interactions with users are. About how the interaction made THEM feel. They are upset that I a blind person maybe don’t use the app because of violations of privacy.
