The team can provide a confidential, supportive, nonjudgmental space to talk and help individuals explore their options for next steps. Individuals who contact any member of the Safe Community Team retain control over what actions, if any, they wish to take.
Anyone who has experienced or witnessed harassment, or would like to discuss a concern related to harassment, bullying, or discrimination can do so through our online claims form (QR code displayed on your conference badge), or in-person with the Safe Community Team.
We are committed to creating a safe, welcoming, inclusive, and respectful environment for everyone attending the conference in Puerto Rico. #SMM2026 will not tolerate harassment, bullying, or discrimination in any form.
Congrats to Rachel Lewis, winner of the Stu Innes Memorial Student Travel Bursary! 🦭 Rachel studies bearded seal breeding & climate change in Arctic Alaska alongside Yup'ik and Iñupiat communities. See you at the #SMM2026 conference! ❄️
And if you’re flying back to the U.S. after the conference, you may also be able to help a rescued Puerto Rican dog or cat reach their new home by becoming a Flight Angel. Come for the puppies, stay for the possibility of helping one on the next leg of their journey 🐾
Need a little conference recharge? 🐶
Come spend some time with the puppies during #SMM2026! These sessions are a chance to step away from the conference buzz, enjoy some puppy cuddles, and learn more about local animal rescue efforts in Puerto Rico.
Bid on donated artwork, books, experiences, and more to help fund sign language interpreters, assistance for blind attendees, childcare offsets, workshop registration support for underrepresented members, and other accessibility and inclusion initiatives!
Costs are high, and there is no pressure to give. However, if you are able, the Society's online auction is a fun way to support inclusion at the Puerto Rico conference in October 2026.
This conversation will continue at #SMM2026 through the free hybrid workshop "Indigenous Leadership, Sea-Kin Care, and Global Collaboration", taking place October 17–18 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Prior registration is required.

The Boorloo (Perth) (Whadjuk Noongar) Statement calls on the SMM and the wider marine science community to recognize Cultural and First Nations Marine Science as foundational knowledge, and Indigenous Peoples as rights holders, custodians, knowledge holders, and scientists.
Marine mammal science is strengthened when we move beyond acknowledgement and toward responsibility, reciprocity, respect, and meaningful partnership.
