@paige Mr. Lisée is a clever guy, but not one that I trust: Is he sharing his true opinions, or saying what he thinks will advance his goals?
Do you think STV is a good system? I used to be more sympathetic to it, but I've since decided simplicity is an important virtue for electoral systems […]
@fairvote.ca Distorted? Only if you presume that seats in the legislature ought to be proportional to overall votes, which of course is the fundamental question.
In reality, #FPTP delivered Quebeckers essentially the result they wanted: https://cosocial.ca/@mpjgregoire/117406306806241008 […]
Ranked choice voting in Canada is pushed by partisans who stand to benefit. You can have proportional ranked choice voting (STV) or add a dozen MLAs to keep local representation but he pushes a system that models his party doing super well […]
If this were true, New York and DC would have the best educational outcomes in the country

Adrien Pouliot: Éric Duhaime's ideas are as radical as they are popular
https://nationalpost.com/opinion/adrien-pouliot-eric-duhaimes-ideas-are-as-radical-as-they-are-popular
"Complex policies can be explained in simple terms, and this is where Duhaime excelled. Slashing $47 billion in wasteful […]
"Oct. 6 will be remembered in mathematics as the day the bomb went off. OpenAI, the [...] “public benefit corporation” that has been making impressive mathematical advances every few weeks for a while now, unleashed a flood of 377 new machine-generated papers, each of which contains a new result […]

@va2lam Fair enough.
Which holds more power in the NA, the PCQ with 19 seats or QS with 9? They have equal theoretical power. When you consider voting coalitions, the PQ plus any one of the other parties would have enough votes to pass a motion. (On the other hand, all three of the other parties would need to agree […]
One of the misunderstandings of those favouring #ProportionalRepresentation is that power in the legislature is proportional to the number of seats each party holds, and thus a legislature with PR would be more likely to do what the public wants. In fact, relative power is more complicated. Let […]
Ooh the new 2015 edition of Shiller's "Irrational Exuberance" has a chapter on whether ten-year bond yields have any relationship to future inflation (in the USA they do not, but they correlate with past inflation ie. buyers demand high bond yields when inflation has recently been high) […]
@ChrisCorrigan I wonder how they set the prices. I think I saw one whisky for $16.22 next to another for $16.45...
When I teach Oakeshott's "Rationalism in Politics" to students, one of the several things they always react against is the claim that politics is a practical knowledge acquired over generations, i.e. within a family, not a techne acquired at university by smart law or econ students.
@ChrisCorrigan Sad to hear. Pubs should ideally last centuries, not come and go. But to everything there is a season...
(The link to their final whisky menu in your post doesn't work.)
Thread on one of my favorite pet peeves. "Medieval" is not a synonym for "bad" or "barbaric" or "cruel" or "violent." Modernity has seen plenty of new and worse ways to be all of those things.

@deborahh No, the election result is essentially what Quebeckers wanted: https://cosocial.ca/@mpjgregoire/117406306806241008
