🌊 Antarctic winter sea ice at 3rd-lowest level on record.
“How sensitive is the global climate system to this loss of sea ice? We're still working to put numbers on that. But the system is changing faster than we are understanding it.” — Will Hobbs @utas.edu.au

A month of broken records for temperatures around Australia. Hottest September ever for minimums across the continent, scores of places setting records for warmest September. A snow depth gauge in the NSW alps fell to zero - a first for any September since it was deployed in 1954.

A story of our time: Approval of biggest coal project in NSW planning commission’s history described as ‘infamous betrayal’. Independent Planning Commission says climate change impacts from Hunter Valley project will be ‘outweighed’ by economic benefits.

Busy few days… more news from me. “ It will go down in history as an infamous betrayal of the public trust.”

News from me: Antarctica’s winter sea ice has peaked at its third-lowest level on record, falling a million square kilometres – or almost 400,000 square miles – short of the long-term average, scientists have confirmed. "This is not a future problem. It’s a now problem.”

What’s more informative? That a fossil fuel project will emit 809 million tonnes of CO2? Or that it will cause almost half a million people to be exposed to unprecedented heat? A new tool tells that story, and fossil fuel corporations are unlikely to like it. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Corporations claim their fossil fuel emissions are a drop in the ocean. But what if we could count the real cost?

The 0.04 kg m² increase in water vapour is the equivelent of 20 trillion litres of additional water, or 20 cubes of water, each a kilometre wide, high and deep.
We are playing with very dangerous forces.

Nice article by @readfearn.bsky.social about the Aug. 2026 record in atmospheric water vapor.

My only criticism: they misspelled vapor throughout the article. Come on, guys, use a spellchecker next time.

From me. Almost 400 native Australian bird and mammal species have been assessed as being at a high risk – or worse – from the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus, a federal government assessment has revealed.

We have seen a rapid escalation of H5N1 bird flue cases in Australia in recent days, and now we have (probably) the first of what will likely be many, many mass mortality events in wildlife. Story from me.
